CD, lets work t bring down the amendments up for a vote this year, first. Loosing in NC should kill many of NOM's tactics, the most annoying of which, to me, is the "the people always vote for traditional marriage." The first time people don't vote for it, they can't say it any more. Their use of the African-American community in this state has also been atrocious. One of the more recently verbose infamous black pastors (Wooden) is from NC and has helped push the amendment. And when the legislators were trying to drum up support, their media events focused very heavily on black male pastors. But opposition events were very diverse, covering a variety of racial, religious, gender and sexual preference backgrounds. If only more people could be shown the truth, this amendment would go down in flames.

What strikes me about the NOM papers is their desperation to find and solidify support, the almost nihilistic cynicism, and the reliance on crude right wing stereotypings. (Black Americans are social conservatives, Latino Americans will turn into social conservatives again if we just enlist the right people from Latin America, etc.) If anyone applied to me for funding or permission with applications such as those NOM sent to its Board of DonorsDirectors, I would reject them as juvenile and delusional. Then again, this is the only crew the Religious Right has with any competence at all.

I'd love to see their reviews of how gay marriage legalization happened in New York. That one gave them apoplectic fits and sent activists on their side into a depressive spiral.

I'm hoping for another referendum on marriage in California in 2014. Just to fully erase Prop. 8 from the California Constition, if not also replace it with an explicit legalization. That would be the stake through the heart of NOM.

Hey, this black woman has been frightfully worried that some black folks WERE so stupid as to fall for what NOM and the other groups tell them in order to influence their vote.

I mean seriously, the black folks holding up a banner at the urging of a handful of white people in protest of the SPLC SHOULD embarrass more than a few out there who did it, of just what a picture like that says.

Anyway, I took no offense at Tim's headline here, I know what he's trying to say.

Two white gay bashing racist bigots did not convince Latino-Americans and African-Americans to hate LGBTI people in enough numbers to vote against our rights. Latino-Americans (Catholic) & African-American (Baptist & evangelical Christians) already hated us enough. They did not take their cue from a couple of white gay bashers. Those African-Americans and Latino-Americans who voted for Prop H8 and all those other NOMZI gay bashing bully ballots would have done that anyway.

NY Senator Ruben Diaz invited this gay bashing preacher to the NOMZI sponsored gay bashing revival because HE (an African-American, Latino-American) believes that LGBTIQ Americans are worthy of death - not because pasty white Brian Brownshit convinced him of that http://youtu.be/LtOMYM-sUkk

Jane,

I went back and forth with the title. I wanted something that both implies wonder (gosh, they aren't just like children) but also was clear that this wasn't my presumption.

I do believe that some conservatives like Maggie and Brian think of black folk and gay folk as childlike. Surely if we actually were intelligent we'd agree with them on all of their policies. I wanted to convey that in the title.

I think that it's there. And I think that I didn't exactly imply that I share that thinking. But if I offended you or anyone else I apologize. I'll think about it some more and if I come to agree with you, I'll revise it.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't mean it this way.

Your title:

"NOM’s problem: black people just aren’t as stupid as they thought"

What it implies: Black people ARE stupid, yes, but not THAT stupid!

I mean.. seriously, timothy. C'mon.
