Lively's use of the word facist is incorrect and I wish he'd educate himself on it. Fascism is one party rule---a dictatorship---based in misguided nationalism fears and paranoias. What the GLBTQ community wants is a sayso in their destinies insdead of a bunch of tea baggers feeling threatened as in this video.

Burning tea bags as a protest is becoming a better and better idea.

Please be advised that Lively is making a 3-day appearance at a church in Oklahoma City very soon, and the Cimarron Alliance there is preparing some actions to stand up to this deranged zealot's anti-gay lies and propaganda. Tim, please help spread the word to your readers (some of whom, I'm sure, are in OK) about the upcoming events. Some info here:

You are welcome Tim. I spend a quite a bit of time fighting for Civil Rights for Sexual Minorities on Right wing and Christian websites.

I have learned is to always focus the conversation from the founding of our country through to today, the reason is we are fighting for Civil Marriage, therefore I always force the person to stick to our civil history as a country. So I don't go any further back than the start of our country.

You probably don't know this about me Tim, but I was at Resurrection City on th National Mall one month after Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered. You may have to go read about Resurrection City. I have seen Discrimination for many many years now, and before I die I hope that our government at every level stops Discriminating against Sexual Minorities.

We have seen through the Black Civil Rights movement that Private Discrimination ("I will not rent a room to gays") will only effectively end after the Government's Discrimination ends.

Thank you for your correction.

I don't think Dr. Cott and I disagree. While she's speaking about marriage as a social institution, I was talking about marriage as a contract. She was addressing the state licensing and control of marriage, I was discussing the ancient reasons for having an agreement.

Snowman has it exactly right... someone who has worked themselves up into a lather over things that logically don't really concern them have something deeper at work going on with them.

I once acquired a roommate, and in getting to know her, all her stories were about how she got into conflicts with the Powers That Be (university, dean, parents, military board when she applied, men's groups, etc. etc. etc.)... I realized later that she defines herself by conflicts, and she creates them when they don't land in her lap. It wasn't long before she set her sights on me, and I found out that I was one of a looooong string of come-and-go roommates this happened to.

Lively has unresolved issues. I hope for his sake and everyone else's that he seeks professional help, but that's unlikely to happen because he likes it too much. Righteousness can be addictive. Conflict can be psychochemically addictive (you literally form synaptic connections to the pleasure center of your brain connected to the stress hormones resulting from conflict). And Lively should be treated the way any other addict is treated.

Personally, I think anybody who'd employ a convicted child molester in a place patronized by kids really has something wrong with them, and Scott Lively has done exactly that.

Scott Lively creeps me out, I can't put words to it really, I just get a bad vibe from the guy. There's something wrong with having that level of obsession with, or even thinking about, the sex lives of other people.

For all the threats of fire & brimstone that I've heard in my life without it ever falling from the sky, I wonder if they realize just how empty that threat sounds?

So yeah Scott, go creepily crawl back in whatever hole you crawled out of and leave the rest of us alone.

Tim, I do not recall that the description of the legal reason for marriage testified by Dr. Nancy Cott was as described by you. If I recall correctly, and I think I do, the primary reason for the State to institute Marriage was to establish stable households. Oh heck I'll just go get it and copy/paste.

Dr. Cott:
"Let me begin by saying, when I'm speaking of the purposes I mean from the point of view of the state that sets up and defines the terms of marriage. And as I look at the history of the institution in our country, I would certainly agree that this is one of the purposes. But it is by no means the central or the defining purpose of marriage. In fact, picking this out rather -- when I heard it yesterday, it rather reminded me of the story about the seven blind men and the elephant, in that each of them is feeling the animal at some side of it; and the one that feels the trunk says, oh, this animal is just like a snake. That is, marriage has many purposes. It is, as I mentioned yesterday, a capacious, complex institution. And the state's interest in having sexual activity between men and
women channeled into stable unions is one of the purposes of marriage. But I think that the larger understanding of marriage, from the state's point of view, and the larger purpose would put an emphasis on the household formation that marriage founds, and the stability of that household formation, its contribution to social order, to economic benefit, to governance. And I emphasize this because, as I said at the outside, it's important to recognize the extent to which marriage has been an institution of governance in our history."
