I have learned is to always focus the conversation from the founding of our country through to today, the reason is we are fighting for Civil Marriage, therefore I always force the person to stick to our civil history as a country. So I don’t go any further back than the start of our country.

You probably don’t know this about me Tim, but I was at Resurrection City on th National Mall one month after Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered. You may have to go read about Resurrection City. I have seen Discrimination for many many years now, and before I die I hope that our government at every level stops Discriminating against Sexual Minorities.

We have seen through the Black Civil Rights movement that Private Discrimination (“I will not rent a room to gays”) will only effectively end after the Government’s Discrimination ends.

I don’t think Dr. Cott and I disagree. While she’s speaking about marriage as a social institution, I was talking about marriage as a contract. She was addressing the state licensing and control of marriage, I was discussing the ancient reasons for having an agreement.

I once acquired a roommate, and in getting to know her, all her stories were about how she got into conflicts with the Powers That Be (university, dean, parents, military board when she applied, men’s groups, etc. etc. etc.)… I realized later that she defines herself by conflicts, and she creates them when they don’t land in her lap. It wasn’t long before she set her sights on me, and I found out that I was one of a looooong string of come-and-go roommates this happened to.

Lively has unresolved issues. I hope for his sake and everyone else’s that he seeks professional help, but that’s unlikely to happen because he likes it too much. Righteousness can be addictive. Conflict can be psychochemically addictive (you literally form synaptic connections to the pleasure center of your brain connected to the stress hormones resulting from conflict). And Lively should be treated the way any other addict is treated.

For all the threats of fire & brimstone that I’ve heard in my life without it ever falling from the sky, I wonder if they realize just how empty that threat sounds?

But I think that the larger understanding of marriage, from the state’s point of view, and the larger purpose would put an emphasis on the household formation that marriage founds, and the stability of that household formation, its contribution to social order, to economic benefit, to governance. And I emphasize this because, as I said at the outside, it’s important to recognize the extent to which marriage has been an institution of governance in our history.”
