Duberman, the researcher who published the letters, gets too intellectual in his analysis, and totally unrealistic about some “widespread tolerance” of male-male screwing around in the Old South – but the references to “fleshen poles” and “she-males” are delicious.

Your quote from the Withers-Hammond letters led me to look up the original article by Duberman (rather than waiting til September for you to publish it, as you suggested). The letters are fascinating. However, your note is incorrect: The September letter is not Hammond’s response to Withers but a second letter from Withers to Hammond. The correspondence going from Hammond to Withers has not been published and may not have been preserved.

Jasper Johns is something of a legend in our family history. He was tutored by my grandmother and lived with his first cousin for a time, who was a great friend of my father. My grandmother would confiscate Jasper’s doodlngs which were beautiful and put them in the trash can. Something she later deeply regretted.
