When even the SBC - who were founded solely to defend and continue slavery, and who are otherwise rabidly anti-gay - denounces you, you know that you've done something wrong

I can assure you, had Providence Road Baptist Church been SBC affiliated, Stith would have either had no comment or he would have been much more gentle in his condemnation.

I can also point out from experience, having grown up the son of a Southern Baptist pastor in Mississippi during the civil rights/desegregation/voting rights movement of the 1960's, the SBC HATES when pastors or members "make them look bad" by saying in PUBLIC forums the things that they were taught behind closed doors at church. Our church, and most if not all SBC's, taught IN CHURCH that blacks were cursed to be subservient to whites and that god wanted the races to be segregated but members would get very upset when a member said so to the NATIONAL press. My whole family had a very different policy on race and racism in public than they did among friends, family and fellow church members.

I think we see the same phenomenon surrounding people's views on gays and homophobia and that's why we have such a Bradley effect every time marriage equality is polled.

It's rather important to keep in mind that it's only the words they find "vile." They agree 100% with the anti-gay sentiment. They're not our friends.

The pastor's congregation supports him, anyways. I'm more concerned about seeing those people on television publicly admit that gay people are worthy of death and need to be "scared straight".
