You mentioned Weir and the Vancouver Olympics; here's a quote from 3 years ago: "Former Canadian men’s star Elvis Stojko weighed in, telling The Globe and Mail “skating is about power and strength. It’s so much more than dressing up as a frou-frou." http://www.marketingmag.ca/news/marketer-news/skate-canada-ices-macho-campaign-rumours-8599

BTW, my best friend in high school who was a figure skater came out right after graduation. IMHO, with their physical and mental conditioning and with all the tumbles they take - on ICE, their athleticism isn't affected by who they love.

Bruce Nugent is a main character in the 2004 film Brother to Brother. Excellent flick that portrays other members of the Harlem Renaissance in flashback. Daniel Sunjata plays Langston Hughes, Aunjanue Ellis plays Zora Neale Hurston.

Gay men are always the exception and not the rule. The same goes to hairstylists and make-up artists. We might be overrepresented in a field, but still straight men will be more prevalent given that we're 5-8% of the population.

Just look at Broadway. How many of the big Broadway musicals have gay protagonists? In a supposedly super-gay setting, we still mostly live vicariously through straight people, and it will continue to happen unless gay people organize and fund good programming with gay protagonists.

There are channels like here!, but they are so underfunded that they can't afford talent and budgets, and the programming is bad in turn -- creating a feedback loop where viewers don't subscribe because the programming is bad, and because of dearth of subscriptions the channel can;t afford a necessary budget for quality productions.

Logo is not even a gay channel. It's reality TV trash, cheap to produce and could be Bravo's little sister channel. That channel is just demeaning.

The problem is I don't think we can ever win in commercial ventures. After Elton started as a quality gay literature and programming site, and then it turned into a trashy entertainment site that lowered its standards of gay programming from gay protagonists or side characters to just having hot men on a program regardless if there are no gay characters. It also measured and found that straight women were increasingly frequenting the site and started catering to that demographic with a more fashion/frivolous entertainment slant.

I understand that male figure skaters tend to be perceived as gay. That being said, my best friend is a former state champion (1980s) and competed or trained with a lot of the people who are now coaches and trainers of the new generation. He has told me several times this perception is wrong and that as a matter of fact, gay men in the sport are the exeption and not the rule.

Fir whatever it is worth
