Jérôme Duquesnoy (left), Piete, 1654 (right).

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY:
Jérôme Duquesnoy: 1602. The Flemish artist was, in his day, regarded as one of the finest sculptors of the seventeenth century. In 1644, Duquesnoy was commissioned to create statues for the nave of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, and the following year he was appointed “architecte, statuaire et sculpteur de la Cour” to Archduke Leopold William, Regent of the Netherlands. it was during the time where he produced some of his most famous works, many of which depicted strong, muscled male figures in the Hellenic tradition. In 1651, he became Court Architect and Sculptor, and in 1654 he went to Ghent to fulfill several commissions when he was accused of indecencies with his assistants. The Privy Council of Ghent convicted Duquesnoy of sodomy and sentenced him to death. He was bound to a stake in the Grain Market in the center of the city, strangled, and his body reduced to ashes. His reputation was destroyed and his memory repressed. It has only been recently that critical attention has returned to his work.

If you know of something that belongs on the agenda, please send it here. Don’t forget to include the basics: who, what, when, where, and URL (if available).

And feel free to consider this your open thread for the day. What’s happening in your world?

It was years ago, but I vaguely remember a website concerned with gay history and gay-themed art that described an anti-gay pogrom that took place in the Netherlands during the seventeenth or eighteenth century. I believe it included an excerpt from a diary entry by Jonathan Swift commenting on the event. It was a great site, wish I could find it again.

“His [Jérôme Duquesnoy] reputation was destroyed and his memory repressed. It has only been recently that critical attention has returned to his work.” – from the article

Geez, it only took around three hundred years.

Today in London:

“The government has hoisted a gay pride flag on Whitehall for the first time in history today (Friday 6 July).”

Enjoy, Priya. I’ve been to two. Both were in early September. The first was in Casper, WY.
I traveled all that way, girding myself for the trip by plane ( I HATE to fly!), and the young gentlemen who got married, got their ceremony blessed by me. I don’t know if I told you that story, but I’ll tell you why I had a duty to bless them.

The second, was in ’08. My girlfriends are respectively a writer, and an attorney and they are neighbors.
Both weddings were attended by the sorts of family and friends that are the most intelligent, compassionate, interesting and most of all…exquisitely informed. I mean, I spoke to a TEN YEAR OLD, who had some amazingly smart things to say about justice in the world.
We talked about marriage equality in Canada for example.
She actually said she didn’t want to have to wait until she graduated from law school, for marriage to be equal in America, like it is in Canada.

I thought about seeing her in a debate with someone like Peter LaBarbera and thought she could eat his lunch, no problem.

Have a great time, girl. There is something very special about a wedding that was hard won to have.
