I think theoretically they have a point but as Jim says it it seems doubtful that there are any gay couples in a romantic relationship in the Olympics. If there were and they were allowed to room together then this would be a different story.

I'd find a way to let the Mark's be together -- they have guns and are very, very good shots.

Thanks. It's great to start the day with a laugh.

There should be no reason a legally married couple cannot room together if both are members of an Olympic team, even if in different sports.

Perhaps there is at least one gay couple on the Australian Olympic team that is rooming together. The Mark's might know about this and that is the source of the complaint.

Well, as everyone knows, having sex before participating in a sports competition drains you of essential life forces needed to compete well. It's especially true for men. That's why it's important that sports men be segregated from women. Otherwise, they might have sex, be drained of their essential life forces, and lose the event.

This view of the power of women to destroy the power of men is rooted in the biblical story of Samson and Delilah.

Oh. This is NOT snark. This view was held for many, many decades: sex diminishes competitive capacity.

@Jim Burroway
Not sure about the Olympics in general, but it probably happens in team sports here and there. For example there was a couple on Norway's national women's handball team: Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg. They broke up a two ago though

It's a really, really dumb policy that two Olympic athletes who are a couple can't room together. When was that laid down, in 1908? Truly stupid and needs to be changed, pronto.

That said, whatever the rule is, it should be just the same for straights as for the gays.

The gay athletes they're talking about are in the closet. That's why they get to room together.

This is such a common tactic. A person has a reasonable gripe about some issue but instead of simply making a reasonable and thoughtful argument in support of their issue they bend over backwards to throw gay people under the bus to make a point.

I saw this just today on the comments section of Huffington Post. Commenting on a story about Target introducing same-sex wedding cards, some idiot rants and rails that Target refused to support the troops because they refused to endorse some "pro-troops" initiative but yet they support gays. As if the two things are mutually exclusive or as if to say how could they not support our precious troops when they support dirty queers.

I so often see examples of this phenomenon. It's truly disgusting.

Timothy, you're absolutely right. It comes from a heterocentric sense of superiority, entitlement and privilege.

Wait a minute!

there are tons of gay couples on the Olympic team who will be rooming together ...

Granted, I don't play much attention to sports, but I'm not aware of any gay couples who are both members of Olympic teams and would therefore be able to room together.
