My first post may have made it sound like I disagreed with Timothy’s article in some way. I don’t. I think he’s right in just about everthing he wrote. I would only quibble with his statement that Cordileone is the most anti-gay Catholic in the country. Cordileone is up against stiff competition with regard to Archbishop Dolan of New York or the loathsome Bill Donohue of the Catholic League. But the important thing is that Salvatore Cordileone is a particularly inflammatory presence for the LGBT community here in California. It’s hard to imagine a worse pick for any Archdiocese in this state containing a strong concentration of LGBT people.

Given that the Catholic Church is a very political organization, Timothy is correct that this is an intentional insult to LGBT people here in San Francisco and generally.

That’s basically what I mean.

If he can’t stand to be there one more day, it won’t matter that he can’t officially be ousted by his congregants in the Archdiocese.

This new Archbishop will be installed in October. MHR in the Castro will be closed by May. Count on it.

The new pastor at Most Holy Redeemer in the Castro has been there about a month. He’s a very decent man. But, as of October 5, his will most likely be THE MOST DIFFICUT job in the entire Archdiocese of SF.

He will undoubtedly have many “dark nights of the soul” within the next 2 years as Crocodileone will most assuredly find something to use to hammer MHR as much as he can. And he has legions of orthotoxic tighty-righties who will be his eyes and ears when it comes to MHR.

The coverage of this appointment seems to be missing the forest for the trees. I don’t think San Fran is being singled out for special treatment. After thirty-plus years of the Wojtyla and Ratzinger, the entire hierarchy of the RCC worldwide has been turned over to the radical fundamentalists and their small-spirited, repressive, exclusionary, punitive concept of god.

New York got Dolan, who’s being posited as a future pope. Listen to him talk about contraception and gay people as ‘part of the culture of death.’ Look at the bishops in Maine and Minnesota putting the full weight and resources of the church behind ugly, mendacious attacks on gay people in their effort to stop marriage equality. Look at the purge the Vatican is waging against the American nuns. The RCC has been remade in the image of Ratzinger; Cordileone is just San Fran’s update on this reality.
