The Marriage Act passed in 2004 was essentially Australia&#039;s version of DOMA. It was only at the federal level. Individual states can still pass their own same sex marriage laws, but they will recieve no federal recognition.

In the US we do have the same concept, where federal law trumps state law, but states do have a high level of soverignty.</description>
