Surprisingly, the Public Advocate did file an amicus brief on the Proposition 8 appeal, jointly with five other organizations. Here it is:

Actually filing amicus briefs (a nice brand name there, if someone’s interested) costs money. This would threaten the million-dollar shoestring on which Eugene operates, so I doubt that he really filed anything. Further, amicus briefs must be even-handed to be considered useful; they must recognize opposing points and argue against them. Eugene’s “me too” and a thousand signatures won’t work.

Like the letters sent by government agencies threatening to shut Eugene up, these briefs are unlikely ever to be seen in public. Because they are imaginary.

Yes, DelGaudio takes money that might otherwise go to effective homophobic organizations. Still, he stirs the flames of homophobia among those who take his emails seriously (and not for their entertainment value) and they go out and vote.

And yes, DelGaudio is always worried … about where his next yacht payment is going to come from.

@ Ed, I agree with your first reason. On your second reason, I’m both old and poor. I make choices between healthy food and political donations myself, and my only concern over old people who consume cat food so they can support haters is whether they’re driving up the cost of cat food. As for Delgaudio, his rich and twisted fantasies about assault threats from guys in warehouses is almost worth 10 bucks, except there’s a porn pic named “Warehouse” with bodies worth looking at. I haven’t seen that one yet but I’ve read the reviews, and it would seem a better investment than having to replace the mental image of Delgaudio with something sexy while paying for his copycat fantasy.

I’m of two minds about Delgaudio. On the one hand, he takes money that might otherwise go to effective homophobic organizations. On the other, I imagine that the people he targets tend to be poor, elderly, and extremely naive. I’ve got a picture in my mind of an elderly baptist lady who’s eating catfood in her unheated home because she gave all her money to Public Advocate.
