Maybe you could provide some perspective on Truscott IV (since he comes across rather badly in your post). I believe he has for some time been a strong advocate for gay rights, and I came across some 1992 DADT testimony by his father that surprised me (link below). I wonder if tossing in an occasional "fag" was a sort of macho posturing to avoid being called gay themselves.
