Everyone, from the governor on down the line, has been very open that civil unions were only the first step toward full equality. It's indicative that the anti-marriage forces had to fish around downstate to find someone to defend civil unions against an equal protection suit, because neither the AG nor the Cook County State's Attorney, where the suit was filed, would do it.

I'd guess Illinois will join the equal marriage states within the next two years. (Oh, and a note to NOM: our voters' referenda are advisory only -- they have no binding force on the legislature. And the last two attempts to get anti-marriage referenda on the ballot, under the leadership of Peter LaBarbera, have failed -- the last one didn't even get enough signatures to file. LaBarbera had to go out and get another job.)
