Andrew,

Unfortunately Berger doesn't seem to be very familiar with Jones and Yarhouse. And I don't have a subscription to First Things.

But if none of the other Box Turtles get to it, I'll get a copy and try to address it. If I don't, please email me and remind me.

Wow. I was 14 in 1983 so I only vaguely recall hearing about Silverman before. What was done to him by those Florida medical personnel is... I can't even find the right words. "Unconscionable" springs to mind but doesn't adequately express my feelings enough about this. I may not have the best of faith but I will say that I am ever so glad I won't face God with that on my conscious. Sheesh.

As a boxturtle reader living in Iceland, a few things to add.

First, over 60% of Icelanders are *against* joining the EU, and as it has to go to a public referendum, the likelihood of joining is quite low.

Second, joining her leadership, and holding those accountable don't really go together. I like her as a PM, but she publicly came out against prosecuting the politicians who oversaw the whole collapse.

Third, while just being visible is a good thing, as far as I can tell, she has done very little for the GLBT community in terms of pushing for any laws or regulations. She doesn't even walk in the pride parade, whereas the straight comedian mayor of Iceland does every year, in drag no less.

Fourth, the repayment is still in debate. Her and her government wanted to sign an egregious and horrible agreement, which luckily the president vetoed, sending to a national referendum (twice!) both times the icelandic people voted NEI (no). The current agreement is much more fair in terms of interest, and the holdings of the collapsed banks will pay most of the debt anyway. However the court case is still ongoing in some EU financial court or other.

Don't get me wrong, Iceland is a GLBT paradise compared to basically everywhere else on earth, certainly the US, but wanted to add some extra info.
