> more than 1,200 French mayors or deputy mayors

Just to put the number into context, there are approx. 36500 municipalities in France. Source: http://fr.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061016003417AAVWwDk

He is the mayor of a town and is not being forced to perform marriages. He does not own the town hall so he has no right to call the law tyrannical. Maybe the towns will just elect other mayors who support equality.

I think he is saying that if the government requires him to perform marriages or have them performed in his town hall against his conscience, it is a form of tyranny.

I don't sympathize in the least. He was elected to perform a duty and that is to ensure the laws are applied equally. If his conscience tells him he can not perform his duties, he can resign for the greater good and allow someone else to take his place.

Orange? Really? Apparently all the opera queens that flock to that place to leave thousands on top of thousands on the town when the festival is going on have not made an impact?

I can sympathize to the extent of being required to personally conduct marriages, but the town hall does not belong to him.

I’m not sure how a law can be tyrannical either when it only gives rights, and doesn't take any rights away.

I'm not sure how a law can be tyrannical if it only applies to 5% of the population. Then again, bigotry doesn't require logic, does it?
