In my studies, it turns out that Joplin, MO was the northern HQ of the KKK. They had two sympathetic Senators in place and one Congressman in Washington. This was during a time (the 1920′s- 1940′s) when the Klan could march in political and holiday parades in DC and were sanctioned by that city to do so with war veterans and law enforcement officers.
I did a bit of research into what this minister’s sources were. And sure enough, when the Civil Rights Movement has finally got the attention of the mainstream media to cover it, church leadership, certain high profile individuals like Jerry Falwell, and Billy Graham (quiet as it’s kept), and notorious politicians like Jesse Helms, and George Wallace, stepped up the rhetoric against integration and school desegregation in the SAME tactical structure as what’s happening now, only without the computer access in which to do so.
But the words, the defamation, the appeals to fear and paranoia, the obsession with sex, and neglect of other issues, invoking God and claiming divine right to do so, EXACTLY…EXACTLY the same.
You’d think there was a playbook (other than the Bible) somewhere they all got their technique from.

Maybe one difference, is that now, the anti gay rhetoric includes black and brown faces spewing it who don’t hear the echoes of that same injustice for the SAME REASONS, just a different target.
And shame on them.
Shame, and shame again.

As a person who grew up hearing these pro-segregation sermons in church I’ve always wondered why no one has done a marriage equality ad that did EXACTLY what this pastor did.

I still think that it would be enormously effective.

How about some of the marriage equality campaigns consider investing some of their millions of dollars in such an ad campaign? It could really make anti-marriage equality people stop and think about how the next generation will remember them. Studies have shown that people don’t vote FOR marriage equality because they don’t think it affects them but they vote AGAINST it because NOM convinces them that it does. Showing them that voting against marriage equality WILL actually hurt them by bringing shame to their reputation among their children, grandchildren and the greater society of the next generation may be just the tool we’ve been missing. Because of my personal experience with racism I’ve thought that this strategy would be effective for a long time but I’ve not found an effective way to sell it to the marriage campaigns. It would be particularly effective to people who are 40+ years old who remember segregation and rampant racism, particularly in the South. 40+, Southerners and African-Americans are three demographics that most need to be reached with an effective campaign. This one would be most effective with those very three demographics.
