The writer of the program notes compared this to Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd, and made the comment that Claggart's motivations were either unclear or unknown. WTF? He reviewed the gayest opera by England's gayest composer, written for his quite gay partner of 30 odd years, on a story that has long been a closet icon... And Claggart's motivations were unclear?
