So let me see if I understand this correctly. When the public allow the media and community leaders to circulate false information about a certain group of people, that “can lead to harassment and even violence against members of those organizations”?

Rather than just posting the messages here, BTB should expose them all over the blogsphere so mainstream media or social media can take hold and naturally go after NOM. They get away with this kind of stuff because we let them.

I like the idea that your article targets their website and the comments their ‘supports’ leave on it, but an additional paragraph highlighting examples of the type of language/labels they use from their official blogs, messages or media releases, would strengthen the conclusion, and I suspect purpose, of this article – they are hypocrites and void of anything ‘christian’.

I’ve had the same experience as manheart. I left several polite, thoughtful comments on the NOM webiste. They never see the light of day. The only comments from the opposing side that survive their “moderation” are the ones that come across as shrill or belligerant — that play into their contrived victimhood.

And we don’t even have to go to the comments for such fodder. Jennifer Roback Morse provides more than enough examples of inflammatory anti-gay language to expose their hypocritical outrage/outrageous hypocrisy, while Thomas Peters, Brian Brown and Robert George are in a tight three-way race for second place.

Quite right! I have left a number of fairly innocuous gay-positive messages there at NOM and I have NEVER had a comment survive moderation….NEVER…. Talk about the right-wing echo chamber… They do, in fact, encourage misinformation, inflammatory, and dangerous rhetoric, and I think will do almost anything they can to hold back the gay community in this era of changing awareness. They are supposedly about marriage but have spilled over into the Boy Scouts controversy. They are not specifically pro-marriage per se, they are specifically and completely anti-gay. They aggressively moderate their comment sections, and are completely responsible for the overall hostile tone therein. One of the elements used by SPLC to define a hate group is the knowing dissemination of factually incorrect information about a group in order to maintain a hostile environment as regards that group (my paraphrase). That is NOM in spades.

As I said on a post about FRC’s similar complaint, there’s a very easy solution, so easy a three-year-old could understand it. They stop spreading hateful anti-gay lies that demonize and target LGBT people, and the SPLC will stop listing them and we’ll stop describing them as an anti-gay hate group. Quid pro quo.
