Dear Ms. Averbakh:
Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.
However, as a gay man, I must decline.
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.
Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. Following the Olympics, I think this is actually the route activists will have to take to target Russia’s anti-gay laws. Just like with the “Don’t Play Sun City” movement when apartheid was still in place in S. Africa, we should be encouraging high-profile entertainers to refuse to play Russia.
Oh, and Miller is 41! That just ain’t fair.

So, I love the letter and the bold stance. But Mr. Miller, while filming Prison Break, denied being gay – publically and to the press.
So, I’m really not so empressed with the man.

I would never hold that against a gay person. To be out is to invite reprisals and abuse. If someone wants to avoid that by denying they’re gay I don’t have a problem with that.

@ Paul in Canada: There is so much that’s hard to come out with in Hollywood. One’s ethnicity.
How many people knew that Martin Sheen what Hispanic, or how many knew which actors were really Jewish?
How many women (or men) in Hollywood can admit their age? Or weight?
Did you know Miller was black, or that old?
I’m gobsmacked that he’s gay. I was on a set and saw him up close and was PROFOUNDLY disappointed that I couldn’t be his wife someday anyway.
Because the man is hotter than fish grease.
I mean, my GOD he’s beautiful!
And I didn’t hold that against him then either.

We just started watching prison break last night. I’m enjoying it ten times as much as I thought I would. If the show isn’t a metaphor for being in the closet, especially while watching the very cute Mr. Miller outsmart and out-tough everyone, I can’t imagine what is.

Regan’s completely correct. While I’m open about being gay, I never reveal either my real age or weight.
Once you state either casting directors start ignoring you for a lot of projects.
I list my age range (40-55) and “heavy-set” and THAT’S it!

He never came out before because that’s the way things work in Hollywood. Everyone sees it as a very gay-friendly industry, but not long ago gay actors were strongly advised to remain in the closet. Maybe that’s changed in recent years, I really have no idea, but the fact is that we’re seeing more and more gay actors coming out. Maybe casting directors are becoming more confortable with the idea of casting a gay man — I hope so, at least.

I think it’s true, kokas. Changing. Bit by bit…and I hope so too.
The talent out there is too dynamite to pass up.
There’s a range of things gay actors could have done long ago that no one had the guts or imagination to deal with.
But now that a little more light is shining through the cracks, there are FANS out there who want to see this talent more than ever.
And orientation doesn’t matter. Kinda of like for the reasons I mentioned. We might enjoy and love looking at these talented people and live vicariously through them and their characters.
But we’re never going to marry them anyway…
