AFA Steamed Over Campbell Soup Ad

Jim Burroway

December 26th, 2008

The Campbell Soup Company is running an ad in the Advocate featuring a child with two mommies. The ads for Swanson’s broth ran in the December 2008 and January 2009 issues. This has the American Family Association boiling:

Campbell Soup Company has openly begun helping homosexual activists push their agenda. Not only did the ads cost Campbell’s a chunk of money, but they also sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support. They also gave their approval to the entire homosexual agenda.

They appear particularly upset that the ads featured a homosexual family:

“Not only did the ads cost Campbell’s a chunk of money,” writes AFA Chairman Donald Wildmon in an email alert, “but they also sent a message that homosexual parents constitute a family and are worthy of support.”

They are a family. What other term would Wildmon propose we use to describe two parents and a son? A pack maybe?

Wildmon is calling on his followers to call Campbell soup to complain. This is typically the first step to one of his boycotts. Campbell appears to be pretty resolute though:

A spokesperson for Campbell’s, however, explained that the advertisements are simply an attempt to reach a wide audience. “Campbell’s has been in business since 1869,” spokesperson Anthony Sanzio told WND. “For more than century people from all walks of life have enjoyed our products. We will continue to try to appeal to all people in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them.”

A pack, LOL. Nice one.

Whenever i swallow a campbell soup it’ll go down that much smoother.

Has anyone checked Campbell’s portfolio/earnings report? Typically Wildmon waits for a company to have financial difficulty before announcing a boycott. Then when the inevitable financial problems arise he says, “see? This is what you get for supporting teh gheys!”. The corporate half-wits inevitably cave out of fear (stupidity) and the Fundies pat themselves on the back.

Oh I get it. We complain that Rick Warren attacks lgbt families, then we are intolerant.

But when the AFA tries to stamp out any visibility for lgbt families they are “fighting the good fight.”

No memo necessary on this one.

Well, it could we call it a woman and her 2 wives? that might placate the AFA

The Success of companies are measured by their financial performance. This just suggests that gay people might want to support The Campbell Soup Company and its position that every family, whatever the structure, should be granted respect. Should Wildmon in fact call for a boycott, gay people can pick up an extra can or so of Campbell’s Soup to blunt his attack.

Now I’ll expect all of those anti-Gay groups who are all up in arms about Gay boycotts of Prop H8 supporters to condemn the AFA…

waiting…

still waiting…

M-m-m-m Good for Campbell’s! Despite all the choices for soup out there, nothing tastes like Campbell’s Chicken Noodle or Cream Of Mushroom!

Let’s support them! Buy Campbell’s soup and food products. And it’s just the right weather for it, too!

Over at The Blend, Pam is featuring a slide show “Please Don’t Divorce Us” as a plea to let the now legal marriages stay legal.

I have so many gay couple and single parent friends.
As in this ad, and everywhere I see children with gay parents in real life.

Those kids are gorgeous, healthy, so well cared for and secure.
THAT is all I have to know.

I have asked the opposition before:
if they could tell the difference between the kids of straight parents or gay parents?

I’ve asked them, why not make ALL children more secure through marriage. Why are the children of gay parents to be made the exception if married parents is the goal?

The people in this ad, are not a theory. As you well know, they are not a fake set up.
The children of gay parents ARE quite beautiful, and as we all know too…

The opposition out there would REALLY hate for the public to see that.
For them, it’s better to fake non existence or that something will inevitably go very wrong with the children of gay parents.
It’s better to lie about the impact of such parents on their children’s lives.

It’s better for them that the public NEVER see a happy and healthy child of gay parents.

It’s a sad day, a horrible day….when such children are treated in such a way.
If these people REALLY cared about children.
Seeing them happy and healthy in a gay headed home SHOULD make the opposition happy too.

After all, it’s not THEIR children those gay couples took in or gave birth too….right?

Or, maybe the bigger point is: if gay parents are producing and nurturing happy and healthy children, then the opposition has NOTHING to worry about and they can all go home and deal with the homes where children actually ARE in misery.

Seriously, these stupid people are an embarassment when it comes to their priorities.

Can BTB provide us with the contact information for Campbell´s Soup so we can send our emails, letters, and phone calls in thanks for these wonderful family advertisements? If Wildmon protests with his group, those of us who support this company should let them know. Buying the products is nice and necessary also, but the company does not know what type of person is purchasing the product at the grocery store. We need to let them hear from more of us than they do from the anti-family Baptist groups.

The main comment page for Campbell’s Soup is here.

The AFA is listing the contact info as:

Douglas R. Conant, President
Campbell Soup Company
Campbell Place
Camden, NJ 08103
Phone: 1-800-442-7684
or: 1-800-257-8443
E-Mail: douglas_r_conant@cambellsoup.com

Conant may be getting a deluge of nutjob emails so if you decide to use that method, I’d advise that you put “THANK YOU FOR THE ADVOCATE AD” in the message or something else that clearly shows support. Something less specific may be counted as part of the anti-gay AFA effort.

I just read Al Mohler‘s book “Desire and Deceit; The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance.”

Apparently he feels the same way as the AFA.

From page 151-2:

Many Christians would be shocked to see how some companies who carefully manage their wholesome images advertise to the homosexual community. Many of these are corporations whose names we know and whose products we buy, but they present an entirely different face when extending themselves to the culture of polymorphous perversity.

Timothy Kincaid

December 29th, 2008

Emproph,

It looks as though Mohler’s writing for media consumption and public image is a bit different than his preaching to the choir in his books. I’ve always found him to be one of the more moderate anti-gays but it looks like he’s pretty quick to whip out terms like “polymorphous perversity” when the newspapers aren’t around.

Or was that just an anomoly?

David C.

December 29th, 2008

I wonder if Mohler actually knows (and intended) the technical definition of this phrase:

polymorphous perverse (adj.):
: relating to or exhibiting infantile sexual tendencies in which the genitals are not yet identified as the sole or principal sexual organs nor coitus as the goal of erotic activity. (Merriam-Webster Unabridged)

If so, that’s an interesting slight. I don’t think I’ve ever been put down quite that clinically. What an asinine and pedantic bully. Probably an insufferable hypocrite, too.

Ben in Oakland

Emproph– the title of mohler’s book desire and deceit, would be tragic if the Christian right weren’t so desirous of being deceitful. As it is, it’s merely funny.

are we talking aobut ted Haggard and Larry craigs brand of desire and deceit?

Are we talking about yeson8’s brand of deceit?

Are we talking aobut the whole ex-gay industry’s brand of deceit?

Emproph

“Or was that just an anomoly?”

This should answer your question, Timothy:

P 82-3:

To the homosexual, as to all others, we must speak in love, never in hatred. But the first task of love is to tell the truth, and the sign of true hatred is the telling of a lie.

“I wonder if Mohler actually knows (and intended) the technical definition of this phrase:”

David C., yes, essentially he did – in order to assert that a person’s sexuality is due to nurture alone.

And Ben, I’m working on a review to highlight the level of, and types of deceit.

What happened to Campbell Soup Company and family values! The founder of Campbell Soup Co., Dr. John T. Dorrance in 1914 would be turning in his grave right now if he knew! Campbell Soup Co. get back to the values that your founder and company first imagined and it does not include a “two” mommy and no daddy household!

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
