A new Gallup poll shows that everyone is sick of the ban on gay men and women in the military. Every measured demographic answered the following question favorably:
Do you favor or oppose allowing openly gay men and lesbian women to serve in the military.
The highest level of support came from “liberals” at 86%. But open service was favored by 60% of “weekly church goers”, 58% of “Republicans”, and 58% of “conservatives”.
As best I can tell, the only demographics who are not in favor of lifting the ban are “White House occupants”, “elected representatives”, and (perhaps) “HRC lobbyists”.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. Maybe I’ve had it wrong all along. Perhaps DADT should be repealed before ENDA is passed, but now I can’t help but think that passage of ENDA or repeal of DADT seems to imply the appropriate action for other.
Somebody needs to conduct a poll of active military personnel. Were that to be favorable to the repeal of DADT, then it becomes a no-brainer. I don’t think the military brass would stand in the way.

In the United States, the military is under civilian control. If large majorities of the population want to end discrimination in the military, Congress and the President should end it. At that point, military leaders, officers and enlisted will be expected to follow the new policy.
If military brass wish to stand in the way of the new policy, they should be disciplined appropriately for insubordination. That is how it works in the United States. Even if bigots in the military were opposed to ending discrimination, they don’t have a veto over civilian control.
