Matthew Shepard in a mid-1990's videoMatthew Shepard has managed to become something of an icon for anti-LGBT hate crimes in America. and like the old religious icons which become a part of our culture, his image has always been a static one. Now a video of an brief interview with Matthew and his then-boyfriend has emerged and is posted on Joshalot.

The web site’s author (his name isn’t given) ran across some videos as part of his research project, one of which includes an interview of Matthew and his boyfriend in the mid-1990’s when they were attending Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. The video, which is not embeddable but can be seen here, shows us a moving, breathing, intelligent and soft-spoken Matthew Shepard that we’ve never seen before, and reminds us of the very ordinary college student that we lost more then ten years ago.

That video was part of a documentary project by filmmaker Tim Kirkman.
A native of North Carolina.
The documentary is called “Dear Jesse”, originally about some shared background of Tim and then Senator Jesse Helms and how Helms affected the LGBT during is long, long tenure in the senate.

This footage was from an attempt to film Jesse Helms at a speech he gave at the college.
Tim interviewed students as they left or were milling around.
And Matt and his then boyfriend Lewis, were filmed and interviewed by Tim.

The footage hadn’t made the final cut to his film, but was added as an epilogue after Matt’s murder came to light.

It was during this time that Frank Rich did an article about this and how Tim came to speak to Matt, and how Mr. Rich helped me get in touch with Tim…who is now a close friend and resides in NYC.

As you can see, Matt is a cutiepie, with a reedy voice and unassuming, modest air.
And when I saw this, as I was still raw from just months after his killing, it broke my heart.

I’ll let Tim know and thank you.

I’ll never understand why self-professed gay ‘Conservatives’ like Andrew Sullivan railed against Matthew Shepard, insisting that it was a simple robbery and that Matt was involved in drugs. When Sully joined with Right-Wingers and said hate crimes legislation was scam “boutique legislation” he did tremendous damage to the work done by those fighting to pass hate crimes legislation.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
