Dr. George Rekers, anti-gay activist extraordinaire, has now clarified to blogger Joe.My.God exactly why it was that he was vacationing in Europe with a gay prostitute. It was evangelism.
I have spent much time as a mental health professional and as a Christian minister helping and lovingly caring for people identifying themselves as “gay.” My hero is Jesus Christ who loves even the culturally despised people, including sexual sinners and prostitutes. Like Jesus Christ, I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them. Mark 2:16-17 reads, “16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the “sinners” and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” 17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” In fact, in a dialogue with hypocritical religious leaders, Jesus even stated to them, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. ” (Matthew 21:31).
Like John the Baptist and Jesus, I have a loving Christian ministry to homosexuals and prostitutes in which I share the Good News of Jesus Christ with them (see I Corinthians 6:8-11). Contrary to false gossip, innuendo, and slander about me, I do not in any way “hate” homosexuals, but I seek to lovingly share two types of messages to them, as I did with the young man called “Lucien” in the news story: [1] It is possible to cease homosexual practices to avoid the unacceptable health risks associated with that behavior, and [2] the most important decision one can make is to establish a relationship with God for all eternity by trusting in Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins, including homosexual sins. If you talk with my travel assistant that the story called “Lucien,” you will find I spent a great deal of time sharing scientific information on the desirability of abandoning homosexual intercourse, and I shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with him in great detail.
You know, Rekers may not have actually had sex with the kid.
And I don’t doubt that he did bore him with endless evangelism. That’s the justification that Rekers gives himself to try and rationalize his own urges to travel for ten days in the company of a twink. It was the excuse that allowed him to dance on the edges of his own unwanted desires but yet somehow see it as noble.
But behind all of the claims of being “like Jesus” is the sad truth: George Rekers, after all this time fighting “homosexual sins”, still is compelled to the company of gay men. And, unable to recognize and accept his attractions which would allow him to construct an ethical life and flow his attractions into a healthy response, he has pushed them down and smothered them and now has no power over them.
So instead there is George Rekers cruising Rentboy, telling himself that he’s only there for the evangelism, that he’s feeling compassion not lust, that it’s ok because he won’t go that far too far not quite not yet really it’s not sin really he won’t have sex with them.
This time.

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. Let’s not dignify his intricate explanations. Here is all anyone needs to know:
Rekers hired a male prostitute to sleep in the same room as him while he was on a tropical vacation.
I honestly don’t care if they had sex. I just want this evil man’s reputation destroyed, and the facts here speak for themselves and are more than sufficient for the task.

Rekkers first claimed he didn’t know his rentboy was a prostitute, now he claims he hired him because he likes to evangelize to prostitute. He is a fool if he thinks anyone is going to believe him now.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can fully understand any article or blog post about this incident that doesn’t include a photo of the rentboy in question…

It would be better to just come out The Gay and hump every twink he could find than have to listen to the hours and hoooooours of counseling from his NARTH buddies. This guy is in for a fate worse than death when they start trying to “cure” him. A well-deserved fate, too.
Straight men may dislike gays because they think buttsex is nasty, or because they’ve been brainswashed by their religion– but no straight guy is so OBSSESSED by homosexuality that they devote their whole life against it. They ALWAYS end up getting caught in a gay tryst.
Well, if Rekkers is married, his wife better contact Ms. Haggard to find out where to purchase those nifty butt toys that keep Ted at home and heterosexually satisfied nowadays.

Phil, he’s changed his story. That’s pretty much guilt by cover-up.

Wow! The bible really is an amazing book cuz there is really an excuse for anything one does in it:
“Why do you, an older man, have that scantily-clothed spry, virile and well tanned male youth carrying your luggage?”
“Jesus wept. Other Bible-y things. Don’t question me.”

I think by the time the two of them got to MIA, “lucien” was already done carrying Rekker’s “luggage.”

Cathy,
Perhaps we approach the news in different ways, but when I see an article that includes the terms “rentboy,” “twink,” or even “escort” or “porn star”…I need to see a photo. No other information seems relevant until that happens.

This emphasis about not having sex brings to mind President clinton. What does not have sex mean?
I do not believe that Mr. Rekers avoided all sexual contact with his paid prostitute. They may not have had intercourse, and perhaps Mr. Rekers isn’t into anal intercourse. I wouldn’t be surprised, if he spent the entire time that he was receiving oral sex from this prostitute spouting off about the evils of anal sex. Mr. Rekers is twisted enough to think this way and view his current line as truthful.
As for “Lucien,” it is clearly not in his interest to ever admit that he had sex with Mr. Rekers for money. Only an idiot would do that without a deal or the stature of limitations having run out.

Phil, Rekker has ADMITTED that he paid for the companionship *cough* of a young male prostitute. At a minimum site rate of $70 an hour. For 10 days. In Europe. Plus all expenses. Just to tell the boy about Jesus, though.
Again, he ADMITTED THIS.
Are you claiming that because no picture has been posted of the escort he was caught with, that none of this happened???

I believe Phil is making a funny, guys. Chill. As for the article, he banged the whore. He banged him for ten days. End of story.

Candace,
No, I think you’re misreading my comments. I’m not saying that the news is false. I’m just saying that I want to see a photo. If a blog or newspaper ran a story with the headline, “Girl’s Skin Turns Bright Blue After Chewing Tainted Gum,” that story would _scream_ for a photo. It’s not that you wouldn’t believe her skin turned blue, it’s just that you’d want to see what it looks like.
When a news story includes terms like “rentboy,” “twink,” or “gay prostitute,” that story also, in my opinion, screams for a photo. Such photos would serve the valuable news functions of helping readers decide for themselves “How young-looking was the man in question?” or “Do Reker and I have similar taste in men?”

If Rekers wanted to evangelize to gay prostitutes, he could have done it for free. Spending thousands of dollars (I’d guess $15,000 for 10 days abroad) to evangelize to one? Baloney.
Add to that the initial story about how he needed someone to help him lift luggage, and it smells outright rank.

The photo is probably being “shopped” around. Once the highest bidder settles it will be available unless the highest bidder is Rekers.

There is another ex-gay angle to this whole sordid mess that we may not have considered. Some of these prostitutes are gay for pay, and are actually heterosexual, just trying to make a buck.
In that case, closet case Rekers might have thought that paying a heterosexual male escort (who has no hangups about sex for pay with men) to spend 10 days with him in a “non-sexual” relationship, might get him in touch with his inner heterosexual self.
Meanwhile, during there sexual activity (poor ex-gay guy falling for temptation with naked hooker in his hotel room), Rekers could be going on and on about how awful homosexual sexual activity is, and the kid is just saying to himself, “Yeah, but it does pay the bills.”

See…now, Lynn…these, THESE international butlers just carry luggage. They only CARRY luggage and maybe straighten your tie. Make tea or a phone call. They don’t do it in the butt area later.
I’m sure Rekers went up and down the Googles and learned international butlers weren’t the butlers for him. Probably all old, too. At least 25 and unfit. Eww.
rentaboy.com + luggage-carrying = European buttsecks > ministering for Jesus

This rentboy’s profile states that he’s bisexual and versatile. He also claims to be 20, but I agree with others — his photos make him look disturbingly young. If Mekers really wanted someone to carry his bags, he could easily have found a big muscle guy in his 30s on the same site.

You may well have the right of it. Sounds familiar from my years of trying to balance desire with religion, of hoping for temptation while rejecting it. Anyway, I’m quoting you all over the Web when this topic comes up. George Rekers is a jerk and a hypocrite, but he has a context.

These techniques are most detieifnly barbaric and evil, regardless of whether they’re applied to sexual orientation or something else. Creating an environment where a child is punished for random behaviors that are arbitrarily labeled as “wrong” (in this case, feminine) is cruel and psychologically torturous on a staggering level. Even if such methods were applied to something like bed-wetting, not only would they not solve the problem, the child would be looking at years and years of therapy. Shattering a child’s self-esteem and forcing them to live in constant fear that the slightest misstep will result in harsh punishment is barbaric no matter what context it is used. It’s also worth noting that the rate of suicide or attempted suicide is higher in gay teens than any other demographic. Ignorant, cruel shit like this is one of the reasons.
