BTB’s Daniel Gonzales live-tweeted this evening’s (May 3) session of the Colorado House Judiciary Committee, which voted 6-5 to advance the Civil Unions Bill. The bill now goes on to the House Finance Committee before reaching the House floor, where it is expected that there is enough GOP support in the Republican-controlled chamber to pass the bill. The Senate passed the bill last week with bipartisan support. Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper has promised to sign the bill if it reaches his desk.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. What a difference a year makes. I seem to recall you saying that Nikkel looked upset and ashamed last year. But in your picture she looks radiant.
Funny thing… I’ve heard legislators of all parties say that they regret their anti-gay votes. Yet I’ve never heard a single one – not even a Republican targeted by NOM – ever say they wish they hadn’t voted pro-equality. At the end of the day, there’s something rewarding about being able to hold your head up and know that you followed your heart and your mind and did the right thing.

Finance is safe. At least one Republican (Kathleen Conti) is supportive, while another is leaning to our side I believe.
