As Rhode Island pushes ahead with marriage equality, State Senator Harold M. Metts is dismayed:
Many from my community take exception to the attempts of the gay rights activists to hitch their wagon to the civil rights movement as it pertains to African Americans. I can change my sexual preference tonight if I want to, but I can’t change my color.
To which I reply:
Reaaaaly?
Senator Metts should explain his method for changing his preference. I had no idea his sexuality was so…fluid.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. I had to Google-image him, to see if it was worth the effort to encourage that change (wink, wink). My apologies: I won’t be expending the effort.
His extreme misspeak reminds me of a quote I read on-line (and I want to post on it in the very near future): “If you can pray the gay away, does that mean you can pray someone gay?” Hallelujah. C’mon somebody. Can I get a witness?

The other side of this coin is relevant, as well.
In civil rights battles, once it has become unhelpful for opponents of equality and freedom to base their opposition on the obvious characteristic they find icky, they have shifted their focus to choices and preferences.
Northern white denominations supported the development of black Southern churches in decades following the Civil War, but their generosity was driven significantly by determination that worship in black churches should be sedate and proper.
Rosa Parks’ act was one of many sparks of the civil rights movement, not because she woke up with a certain skin color on 12/1/1955, but because she chose to defy the authorities. The authorities of the day said, “It’s all good, we’ll make sure you get where you’re going, you just need to choose a different seat first.”

Just one correction:
Metts is a Rhode Island senator and that comment was made before right before the Rhode Island senate voted for marriage equality. With all the progress going on at once it is easy to get them mixed up.
But as to his comment, I guaranty that if we were to do a sexual orientation test with him we would find that in truth he can’t change his sexual orientation on a whim. But of course his ideology is more important to him then facts.
One also wonders, if it was that easy to change then why would ex gay groups that try to change Sexual Orientation through years of therapy exist? Is he saying that they are all liars?

Historically many African-Americans “changed their color” by passing into the white community. Skin bleaching potions were marketed towards African-Americans and in many cases people’s social ranking was based on how light or dark their skin color was.

I had trouble sleeping due to wondering if Metts had decided to prove he could eradicate the straight last night. He would need to produce evidence, of course, so I was anticipating a YouTube video of Metts racing to his local gay bar seeking his first man-date to celebrate, and then showing him inflate with his playmate. Or more likely, it would show him going home alone and disappointed to accept his fate and mastur . . .

Based on that picture of Harold Metts, I have no idea what “his color” is.
What Mr. Metts is talking about is his ethnic identity. And, as many here have noted, ethnic identity can be changed for some people.
Ironically, Mr. Metts – a very light tan man – is probably one person who could have done so.

I think the reason so many straight men believe that people can choose their sexual orientation is that many of them believe they have done so.
Meaning that they are more than incidentally bisexual, but “decided” they were straight and went on to lead a straight life — more or less.
From what I can see, there are at least several times more closet cases than there are openly gay and bisexual men.
