Last night, while Barney Frank was resting up in preparation for trashing Log Cabin Republicans before the DNC’s LGBT Caucus, the Los Angeles chapters of Log Cabin Republicans and Stonewall Democrats were co-hosting a fund raiser for Minnesotans United for All Families. And this, I think, illustrates a real difference between the old school power-broking party boss mentality and today’s pragmatic goal-focused community. And I, for one, am happy to be beyond Barney Frank.

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.
When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.
Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.
Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.
The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.

I strongly disagree with what Rep. Frank said last night. I hope we can move away from this ugly style of politics on BOTH sides but I can’t think of ANYONE that I would rather have had on our side over the last couple of decades than Barney Frank. Agree or disagree with his style or his politics I think he deserves our respect.

xdevildog: ‘Ugly style’?!?! He’s consistently divisive just because the other side says something he doesn’t like. That’s something that needs to be removed from BOTH sides of the isle.

Barney Frank has become more and more irrelevant every year. This just puts a nail in his coffin.

Raising money for LGBT families while simultaneously supporting and apologizing for a candidate that wants to use the Constitution to legally dismantle those families. That’s a bit counter productive wouldn’t you day? The LCR is goal oriented. Their goal is to oust the most pro-LGBT administration this country has ever seen and replace it one that wants to pander to the religious right while setting LGBT Americans back two generations. The LCR deserves to be trashed. Barney was right to do it.

Mr. Kincaid, Maybe you’d feel different about him if you had lived in this country before Barney Frank came out and began openly fighting to win our rights, and knew what opposition he was up against, and is still up against. I consider the LCR as a political group to be traitorous to our struggle for equality, because they put that struggle second in importance to the economy. Any gay person in the last 50 years who hasn’t realized that for us there simply is no more important issue than gaining our right to equality as who we are simply hasn’t been awake. They don’t speak for me and I will never sublimate my activism to their concern for their precious portfolios.

Really? Move beyond Barney Frank? How amazingly arrogant. He was out there fighting for us before most any of us had the nerve and the ability to be out. We’re not moving beyond him, we’re standing on his shoulders.
And, the Republican Party just voted on a platform that specifically rejects us and our families. How is supporting that party and that platform anything but being an Uncle Tom? There is working from within to make change and ten there is kissing the ass of the people who hate you. Give me Barney Frank any day.

How delicious – trashing Frank for trashing LCR which routinely trashes every sane gay or lesbian! LCR and their only slightly dumber brother GOProud mis-state Groucho Marx’s famous quip: “I want to join any club that would refuse to have me as a member.”
And what TeaParty/GOP policy would you embrace? The choices are varied: VoucherCare, Throw Granny out of her Medicaid financed nursing home, massive tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, more war department spending, endless and growing deficits. And from a dull duo who have never started a real nuts-and-bolts business or created a job – other than stable-hands for dressage horses and car-elevator operators.

“Today’s pragmatic goal-focused community” – how fabulous these folk must be in that wonderful land beyond Barney, where Democrats and Republicans can get together and throw a party for the Minnesotans. Certainly, if I’d known, I’d have tossed some money their way.
Unfortunately, Googling “stonewall democrats and log cabin republicans joint fund raiser minnesota families” yields only THIS article. So, “beyond Barney” was anyone COVERING that magnificent event sufficiently to give advance notice? Pragmatically, it’s nice to let people know about these things. This excellent and worthy effort (the coming-together of the two disparate groups) was doubly newsworthy; and here we are finding out about it after the fact.

Reed,
It’s not too late. Just send a contribution to either of the organizations and I promise that they will make sure it gets to Minnesotans United. Or you can just send it directly to the organization.
And, no there was no MSM news coverage. No one COVERED the event, other than me. But yes, it was pretty fabulous.

“Barney Frank is a distinguished and honorable public servant. He has faced nearly 40 years of unspeakable hatred and persecution for being the most prominent and outspoken openly gay elected official in the country. Regardless of what he has to say about Log Cabin Republicans, the notion that they would suggest a man as brave and upstanding as Congressman Frank is either cowardly or a bully is both deluded and absurd.
“The true bullies are the hate-mongers in the GOP who want to strip us of our rights and shove us back into the closet. And ‘cowardly’? Cowardly is making pathetic excuses for the backward and misguided anti-LGBT policies of your Party. The Log Cabin Republicans are the most weak-kneed, sycophantic apologists I’ve ever encountered. After their dismal performance at the RNC convention driving the GOP platform even farther to the right, they should give back all the money they’ve fleeced from their donors and close the doors.” – Jerame Davis, National Stonewall Democrats executive director, via press release.

I’ll make you a deal. For those who don’t believe the event occurred, I’ll provide a link to it’s Facebook page.
However, your side of the deal is that if you do go check to see if I’m lying to you, then you have to make a contribution. Not a huge one (this was a very affordable fund raiser), but you have to give something.
Fair enough?

Why is it that when I post the statement by Jerame Davis, the National Stonewall Democrat’s executive Director, you won’t post the comment?
Is it because he refutes the view of the author on Barney Frank, and offers a full throated statement of support of him? Just curious.

Tim, maybe you should have posted your prof of the event prior to the questions about it. Generally that’s what a reporter does. They provide back up for their claims, especially one in which they were the “ONLY ONE” covering it. But then again, that;s what a good reporter does. I don’t agree that we had a “deal”. You were simply asked for proof of your statement. If any other writer on this site had made specious statements, I would have asked for proof of it as well. It’s not my fault you got lazy with this post.
