Where Did The Parents Go?

Lynn and Vice-President Dick Cheney with Samuel David CheneyAs I said yesterday, congratulations on Mary Cheney and Heather Poe on the birth of their healthy baby boy. Since I posted that announcement, I’ve thought about it some more and have a question I hope someone can answer.

I understand that Mary may not feel much like having her picture taken right away, but it’s odd that the first publicly-released photo is one in which the grandparents are holding the baby. Sure, these particular grandparents are famous and powerful, but isn’t it traditional to wait until the baby’s parents are ready to have their photo taken? After all, they’re the ones who will be raising little Samuel, not the opposite-sex couple you see smiling in the photo.

Or are Heather and Mary reprising their disappearing lesbian act from the 2004 Republican National Convention? Or am I making too much out of this? It just strikes me as odd.

When my daughter was born, her grandparents were falling over themselves to get photographed with the new baby, and sending pictures to every relative and friend they could think of. I personally didn’t want to be in snapshots — I felt like I’d been hit by a bus — luckily, I’m not famous enough for the media to try to capture my image for posterity!

Every parent is different (and the stresses of public attention can only make things more difficult), but personally I was proud as could be of having my child photographed whether I was in the picture or not.

Maybe I’m making too much out of this, but I thought it was odd for this to be the first public portrait of Samuel. This is usually a more carefully considered decision than snapshots shared among family members.

I can certainly understand though if Mary doesn’t think she’s quite ready for her close-up.

I’m not seeing it as a deliberate exclusion… yet

When grandson Philip Richard Perry was born to Liz Cheney and Phil Perry in July 2004, the White House issued the same type of photo: The baby with Dick and Lynne Cheney. Maybe they’re just being consistent?

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
