Pat Robertson Says God Will Destroy America Because of Marriage Equality

Jim Burroway

June 27th, 2011

We’re doomed, and it’s all the homoosexuals’ fault:

I think we need to remember the term sodomy came from a town known as Sodom and Sodom was destroyed by God Almighty and the thing that they practiced was homosexual activity and even they tried to rape angels who came down there, so that’s the kind of people they were. But beyond that, Jesus when He spoke of Sodom He didn’t say anything about the homosexuality he talked about just the fact that business was as usual until God decided to destroy it. And He sent an angel down there and He said to Lot and his family, “get out now because I’m gonna destroy this whole area.” That’s where sodomy came from, we use the term sodomy and it means Sodom.

What’s it like? We’re heading that way as a nation. In history there’s never been a civilization ever in history that has embraced homosexuality and turned away from traditional fidelity, traditional marriage, traditional child-rearing, and has survived. There isn’t one single civilization that has survived that openly embraced homosexuality. So you say, “what’s going to happen to America?” Well if history is any guide, the same thing’s going to happen to us.

…It’s not a pretty world we live in right now, and we need all of God’s help we can get. And I don’t think we are not exactly setting ourselves up for His favor.

How does this man’s logic even make sense? Not one single civilization? Has he been to Canada? France? England? Germany? Italy? He always sounds like he’s just making things up as he goes along to me. Also, as I understand it, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because the people there were not being good to one another, not because they were raping angels. But I’d have to reread the story to make that point and I just don’t have time for that at this moment.

If Pat’s right I wonder why god hasn’t gotten around to destroying Canada and the other nations with full marriage equality.

Wow. Let me quote: “And He sent an angel down there and He said to Lot and his family, ‘get out now because I’m gonna destroy this whole area.'” Perhaps God is telling you to get out of America since it’s OBVIOUSLY going to be destroyed? I wonder how many people (liberal or conservative) would miss you? Certainly I wouldn’t!

@Priya:
Sometimes I think the only two countries that matter to people like Pat are Israel and the USA. The rest of the world might as well not exist for all they care.

It seems to escape these people’s notice that Israel has had gay people serving openly in their military for a long time and doesn’t have a whole hell of a lot of prejudice towards them either…

Actually, come to think of it, I’m not sure Pat’s followers care one damn bit about not only anything outside the USA I’m quite sure they’re so absorbed in their own selves and their own subculture that they think his ramblings make sense.

Seems like reality just does its own thing and leaves them be.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” 18

Lets see:
equality = good
Bigotry = bad

and I do not even believe in this fantasy!

What Pat Robertson says:

“God will destroy America because of marriage equality.”

What I hear that Pat Robertson says:

“Blah, blah, blah… hate, hate, hate…blah…blah..blah…hate, hate, hate.”

Blech.

Blackdog said “Sometimes I think the only two countries that matter to people like Pat are Israel and the USA.”.

I think that’s true Blackdog. A lot of these sorts of Americans seem to think there isn’t a world outside of those borders.

Buckle up! It’s going to be a wild and bumpy ride this week. The insane hyperbolic shrieking rage will rise to heretofore unseen heights. We’re in new territory now!

But now that our long term winning seems certain, and I’m becoming a bit smug, I’m relaxed enough to see/hear Robertson (plus many others), and realize that sometimes insanity can be fun to watch. Maybe that’s where the fun in fundamentalism came from.

So, have some fun by checking out this dose of insanity:

It is true that not one ancient society that embraced homosexuality survives today. It is also true that not one ancient society that rejected homosexuality survives today. It is the nature of ancient societies that they tend not to be around today.

But maybe we should play it safe and take Pat’s warning. France recently rejected SSM, so I think that in order to regain God’s favor, we should very quickly make American more like France.

The irony here is that “sodomy,” as that term is legally defined in the states that formerly outlawed the practice, is practiced by >90% of *heterosexual* Americans, according to recent public health surveys.

I am sick of the Sodom/Sodomite reference. I am not interested in raping anybody, angelic or otherwise. Genesis 19 is one of the strangests chapters in the entire Bible.

You are correct Sarah:

Ezekiel 16:49
New International Version (NIV)
49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

Also let’s not forget that no trace of a historical Sodom has ever been found. And also that the Genesis story ends in Lot’s two daughters getting him drunk and fornicating with him to get pregnant. If one approves of the first half of the tale then I assume one must also approve of its conclusion.

I beg EVERYONE to google “researchers asteroid Sodom Gomorrah”.

Since many of you won’t I’ll paraphrase:

Researchers have proven and published that an asteroid hit the area in the late 5000’s BC – the trajectory came in over Austria, and left a strange, previously unexplained gouge in the topography.

A celestial event recorded by a civilization that did not understand the mechanics of rain. Centuries were spent trying to understand it. Morality, and its shortcomings, is what they came up with.

OMG, the rapture is coming, the end of the world is coming, I’m running all over the house getting bottled water ready to last for some time and dried food goods, panicking, Pat Robertson is on my TV spewing whatever and…, oh wait, True Blood is on, sorry Pat, got more important things to do then worry about America falling apart.

One quick note to Pat though, having sex with angels bad, (because for some reason angels can’t defend themselves) yet where is the outrage with aliens from outer space having sex with us? Besides, just who then are angels suppose to have sex with, the bible says nothing about there being female angels? In fact, the bible says nothing about any powerful women in heaven, besides Mary.

@Sarah, Piyra – see also Jude 1:7

As a morality story, what is interesting (to me) is the predicate, which is Gen 18, not 19.

The predicate is that a society can be given over to “iniquity” so completely that not even 10 can “remain” righteous.

Yet, somehow, to the participants, what they are doing may be “seductive” or “intoxicating” or even seem a righteous pursuit to them. It postulates that there are insidious belief-systems. Afterall, Lot’s wife turned back, his sons in law laughed off a warning, and the townsmen at Lot’s door were offended that a foreigner might judge them, if only by not adhering to their ways/customs.

That perspective, perhaps, yields clues to any apt social-sexual teachings/considerations, which involve principles that are more general than gay/nongay.

We should destroy Pat Robinson for being so vendictive. He’s evil himself and should be punished.

Kate

June 28th, 2011

Hmm, first Lot offers his daughters to the crowd as substitutes for the angel, then he fornicates with them? Oh, that’s a guy I REALLY want to take morality lessons from. Nowadays, he’d find himself in prison with other sex offenders…all things considered, I’m pretty ok with living in the now times.

He’s just cranky cuz he didn’t get raptured, and he has to keep drumming up money to pay for his huge, security fence-enclosed compound in Virginia Beach.

Kate

June 28th, 2011

@Amicus, are you saying that the crap Pat is spewing is part of the Christian right’s “insidious belief system”? Because I totally agree. They won’t be happy until there aren’t even 10 people left who don’t agree with them.

Scary lesson, indeed.

Robertson has been going on for like forty years about how God is going to destroy America because of homosexuality. Don’t forget that the Moral Majority, which was neither moral nor a majority, was his idea. The worst part is that people like him actually have political power or at least influence.

Amicus

June 28th, 2011

No. One can easily dismiss Robertson without the need to say that there is nothing worth consideration in the story about Sodom.

One is constantly peeked by the rationalist libertarians, for instance, who seem to think that there are no threats to civil society from sexual relations.

June 29th, 2011

It was the inhospitality shown by the townsmen toward Lot’s guests, not the destruction of the men of Sodom by God for trying to know the guests. That is similar to the story of Abraham in Gen. 18: 1-5 about Abraham’s welcoming behavior toward angelic strangers who approached his tent. Abraham was very hospitable toward the three men.
The townsmen of Sodom were Canaanites, whose customs the Israelite priests considered corrupt: these men may have been more concerned about two strangers who were welcomed by Lot, who himself was a foreigner in their midst. The townsmen were inhospitable toward strangers and violated a custom common to the people of the region.

This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
