Jim and Box Turtle Bulletin Team,

We received your email this morning Jim, and we are so proud of you!

I had no idea when I posted on your blog last October what would be discovered and where that post would take all of us, but we are so grateful to know what really happened all those years ago, and to also understand what a sham reparative therapy actually is.

You gave Kirk a voice, probably for the first time in his entire life, and you have helped shine the light on the damage that continues to be done.

With eternal gratitude,

The Family and Friends of Kirk Murphy

Congrats! This is certainly one of the premier places on the web to get news related to LGBTQ issues.

A thousand years ago (or thereabouts), GLAAD selected winners based largely on who would show up. And, in a way, that was a relatively fair way to issue the awards – those publicly attending were the ones who were allies of the community.

But as a few real stars lent their name and as media attention shifted from titillation to actual coverage, the awards gained prestige and GLAAD established a process by which nominations and balloting were introduced. I haven’t been in a while, but when I last attended, The GLAAD Awards had taken on prestige within the industry and were in some ways a mini-Golden Globes of sort. All the studios had tables and a stars often came even if not nominated. Presenters included A Level moviestars and legends.

But way back when, not having the Oscars’ budget for Price Coopers, it was GLAAD’s local Los Angeles accountant who tallied the ballots and certified the winners. That was a lot of years ago, but I still remember the excitement of being – for a while, at least – the only one to know who won and by how much.

Maris, your posting brought a tear to my eye for Kirk. I’ll never forget him Maris, never. YOU and your family are very very generous and I want to sincerely thank you.

While it is nice, GREAT even, that Jim & BTB is up for an award I am sure I speak for all, we wish for Kirk that there never even was a story in the first place.

Thank you so deeply for educating the public. Hugs to your brother, I’ll never forget him saying how he took lickings for his brother. It beaks my heart.

Sincerely,
StraightGrandmother

Congratulations, BTB!

I’ve read all the other pieces, and IMO, the only one that might give you a run for the money is “The Rainbow Struggle.” Not because it’s a “better” piece, but because it’s a series which addresses the issues facing LGBT people globally. Hence, on that basis alone, it may offer more appeal to those voting.

Question: who votes for the GLAAD awards?

I think BTB should have been nominated for “Outstanding Blog.” The dedication, time, and money the BTB staff has put into maintaining BTB since its inception is reflected in ALL the outstanding pieces published here; “What Are Little Boys Made Of” is just one of many. You deserve to be recognized for every one of them.

Congratulations – as well, the breadth of the “Digital Journalism” nominees seems to cover investigative, documentary/historical, straight reportage, and literary/profile pieces.

Distinguished company, indeed. All’s well in the digital world.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings.
