Rest in Peace, Thomas Kinkade

Timothy Kincaid

April 7th, 2012

Thomas Kinkade, painter of treacly images of cottages in the woods surrounded by lush plants and strategic sourceless beams of light, has passed. He was 54.

The self described “Painter of Light” was, perhaps, the best known living artist of the past decade or so. And while his paintings were not my taste, if you like schmaltz then Kinkade was your man. Viewing his work almost entirely as a commercial enterprise, Kinkade painted not from his vision but rather to give the masses what they wanted. He found no artistic inconsistency with painting one of his cottage in the woods scenes and then adding in Snow White. But then, I don’t find it inconsistent either.

My interest in Kinkade, and for commenting on his passing, is purely personal. I wearied of hearing, “oh, like the painter” upon introducing myself and had to force myself not to react when some poor soul walked away thinking my first name was Thomas. Had they confused me with Val or Shannon, I might be a bit less irritated.

But I will say that at least he didn’t paint on velvet and as best I can tell he never included either Elvis or Marilyn in any of his pictures. And, other than to those who sought to attach their wagon to the Kinkade syrup-train, he seems not to have caused much harm.

Kinkade is described as a devoted Christian (Church of the Nazarene) but seems to be more of the Happy Christian variety than the God’s Gunna Get Ya bunch. And other than a wee drinking problem and a string of unhappy investors, he was mostly liked and admired and from all accounts was a good husband and father.

I wish him peace wherever he may be, and offer condolences to his family.

[And to those who really insist on asking: yes. Other than a few odd exceptions, all the Kincaids – with all the various spellings of the name – are related (though perhaps somewhat distantly). So I get to count Thomas, and the far more objectionable Cliff, as kin. The distant “no relation” kind of kin, but entitled to the same tartan nevertheless.]

Notice all the little cut-downs in your article. When you die, what hundred snarky things will other people write about you, Tim? I wonder.

Or isn’t it really better – civilized – to let all that go in the face of death, and remember a man’s good stuff instead?

Russ, if you thought this was spiteful, you need to get some perspective. I recommend JoeMyGod, where the progressive frenzy is already piling spittle on the artist’s coffin.

I like his art from what I’ve seen. It’s not no.1, but I wouldn’t mind having it.

I’ve read accounts of poor work relations and misogyny, but nobody stops to think just what major assholes some of the best artists in the world have been. Hell, I don’t recall people turning up their nose at Mozart and others of a similar ego.

Aristophanes was one hell of a homophobe and a misogynist, but Lysistrata is not tossed off as a result.

There’s also a gay porn director called Tim Kincaid, apparently….

Yes Occono, his porn producing name was Joe Gage. Apparently he made a name for himself in the 70’s with a trilogy of films, the only title of which I recall was LA Tool Works.

I discovered this interesting fact when Dr. Michael Brown inquired if I was said porn director.

I’m not.

incidentally, while Kincaid is a not too common name and Timothy is currently not in the top 100 names, there seems to be no shortage of Timothy Kincaids.

church of the nazarene?? being a former member of that denomination, i can safely say his ‘wee drinking problem’ would have been a MAJOR problem with the church. they would have taken his name off the membership role. alcohol is a huge taboo. huge!! my guess is that this ‘devout christian’ led a double life.

Just to note that Mozart was a man of enormous charm and accomplishment who was much loved by his contemporaries. He adored his wife and children, worked hard, and changed the face of music. The portrait of him in Amadeus (a name he disliked, preferring to call himself Amadée) is compete fiction.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International.
