I frequently insist that most Christians do not hate us. I continue to believe that to be true.
However, the people in this video are viscerally excited about the idea that “ain’t no homos going to make it to heaven”. Not just applauding a small child, but whooping at his message. They aren’t vaguely disinterested, theologically pondering, or politely appreciative. No, they are delighted, genuinely thrilled that their idea of heaven has a “no homos” policy.
That’s hatred.
Now the church has released a “we don’t hate anyone” statement, but it simply isn’t possible to be thrilled that there ain’t no homos going to make it to heaven, unless you hate homos.
But what is even more fascinating are the words that were replaced in the song so as to give it a message that caused the congregation to leap to its feet. The child sings:
“I know the Bible’s right, somebody’s wrong/ the Bible’s right, somebody’s wrong/ Romans one, twenty-six and twenty-seven/ Ain’t no homos gonna make it to Heaven.”
The original words were
“I know the Bible is right / Somebody’s wrong… / I told you once, I told you twice / You can’t make it to Heaven with a sweetheart and a wife”
I guess that just wasn’t inspiring enough.

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. Actually, I think you’re wrong. The acceptance of gays and lesbians isn’t well rooted in the religiously christian community, but rather, for the most part, in the agnostic or non-practicing communities. This just makes me sick.

There are many fundamentalist Christians who just want us dead. This is becoming increasingly clear as more and more of these sorts of videos come to light. I guess these groups are starting to panic as we are achieving gains in our civil rights.

i think this should show people that we are in a war. i disagree with the writer that most christians dont hate us. they do.. they hate us… the hate the black president… they hate immigrants… they hate black people…they hate muslims, they hate strong women who can think for themslevs they hate anyone who is not white , heterosexual and “american”. maybe in other parts of the country it doesnt seem that way but anywhere in the southeast including florida its not that way. i for one think if obama gets re-elected.. and for me its a big if.. these white evangelical uneducated masses down south will go collectively off the rails on a crazy train and violence will get worse. these are the same people who bombed a black church in birmingham and sicked dogs on peaceful black marchers and turned water hoses on them and lynched them all back in the civil rights days. they will try and do it again to gays

I doubt that would happen, and fervently hope it doesn’t.
But even if it were to happen that way, overall we (those who survive, anyway) win. Seeing such violent responses to people just peacefully asking to be treated like anyone else is a large part of what swung public opinion around.

I grew up to a significant minority of Christians and every other kind of straight person expressing eliminationist sentiments about us. That only slackened off among theologically reactionary Christians after the Christian Right got together, I think into the ’80s, and decide their theo-political line would be to “love the homosexual” — while “only” hating our sin.
I think post-Baby Boom LGB people have been living in a fools paradise in this regard. The eliminationist anti-gay mentality never went away, it just went underground. You can act shocked if you want that non-Nazi straight people are saying this kind of thing publicly. I won’t waste any time or energy pretending that this was unimaginable.

More and more I hear this kind of kneejerk anti-Christian attitude, and it’s depressing. Those of you who assume all Christians are the enemy will be fighting a whole lot of people who aren’t against us, as well as some who are.
As to the latter part of your post, though, I’m the last person to buy into the “it can’t happen here” mentality. The roots for society-wide fascism and genocide run deep down into American history.

if it existed, who would want to go to heaven anyway? i certainly wouldn’t want my soul to spend eternity with the likes of such hateful souls.
would the idea of going to heaven still excite so many people if it didn’t have a discriminatory entrance policy? i know clubs that would most probably rather be shut down than let black people or gay people in to spend their money there… i choose to stay away from such clubs and enjoy my life.
it seems like for heaven to be a special place, there would have to be an unworthy group (which would, according to popular interpretations of the bible, include gay people) to make others (the chosen few) feel heaven-worthy. so, without gay people to exclude… heaven probably wouldn’t be so special. so, in order for people to look forward to heaven, the hate and discrimination must continue to exist, at least up there somewhere in the heavenly realms. heaven and discrimination need each other.
what i don’t get is, why won’t those who get excited over heaven’s discriminatory policy towards gay people realise that letting gay people live their lives as gay people (e.g. letting gay people marry each other legally) right here on earth actually adds value to the heavenly discrimination that they hold so dear?

I actually found out about this when a fundamentalist Christian 20-something friend of mine posted a link to it on Facebook with this comment:
“A true Christian should never applaud the mention of persons being denied entry to heaven. Our sincere wish should match that of our Lord Jesus Christ, who’s desire is that ALL persons be saved.”
What, precisely, his views are regarding homosexuality and the Bible are not mentioned. I’ve never asked. But it doesn’t sound like he hates anybody who is homosexual.
