I Didn’t Say WHEN In May…

Jim Burroway

May 2nd, 2016

…although I had meant for it to be the first of May. (In fact, Timothy went ahead and gave it a start.) I did manage to get most of the database repaired, although a number of comments will likely remained somewhat messed up for quite a while.

But last Saturday, my partner Chris got off the phone with his mother and was very worried about her. She’s 79, and has been laid up with a broken kneecap since last October. Both of my in-laws are very active, so for her to be essentially homebound has been especially hard. And last Saturday, she had reached her breaking point and had essentially given up hope of ever walking again. So we tossed some clothes into the car, dropped the dog off at the kennel, and on Monday headed to Abilene, Texas, arriving two days later just in time to see her hobbling not just using a walker but with a cane, albeit still somewhat unsteady. It appears that her rehab breakthrough occurred that Monday. By Friday, we got her out of the house and enjoying a nice dinner at Red Lobster, something that she had been craving for months.

So that’s the (very) good news. We are now working our way back to Tucson. After that, I still have more work to do to get this website back to full functionality. There are still problems going on with the back-end, and I have some other revisions I want to make in order to get Facebook working once and for all. I’m targeting Sunday May 15 to get everything put back together again. Until then, we will be doing some occasional posting here and there, but the Daily agenda won’t make its re-appearance until I can get the rest of the web site back up and running. I appreciate your patience, apologize for the interruption, and invite you to stick around for what I hope will be an even better BTB.

Boy, howdy, can I relate. Two weeks ago, on a trip to Cincinnati with Bill, I collapsed in our hotel room while he was off teaching his training class.. After emergency dialysis — a decision Bill had to meke for me, which went against specific instructions I had given him — and two days of a Michael-Jackson-drug fueled coma, I left, AMA, to come back to Georgia. Bill had been using the promise of going to Joe’s Crab Shack to get me up and moving… and though walking a straight line takes concentration and time, I can make it about 30 feet now, unassisted.

So, Friday night we went to Joe’s. I had their appetizer trio and the double lobster steam pot, took a huge doggie bag home, and ate the rest of it early Sunday morning. I loved it.

And the found out on Monday Joe’s Crab Shack is going out of business… their restaurants to be closed a few at a time over the course of next six months.

Karma, huh?

Seriously — you guys do important work, and your voices need to be back adding to the choral cacophony of the internet.

If changes do have to be made, can it be in the area or more conservative political legislative “push backs” against our SCOTUS victories? My health precludes any type of “sex like,” so the ins and outs of how an where to get PrEP don’t interest me (except my fear of an unknown future for PrEPpies).

Just my two-cent’s worth.

I am reminded of a comedienne [likely lesbian hence my memory] saying something about a bodybuilder who worked out religiously, that he was “puffed up” here and there, all “veiny and bulging”, “thick necked”, etc, etc.. (no offense to anyone)

And she said rather emphatically that at some point one must “TAKE A DAY OFF!”

Jim, wishing you, Chris and his parents the best. Getting mobility/hope back is key. I know from when I was looking after my Dad that he didn’t get better until he started feeling he could make it on his own again.

Now, we’re starting to have to deal with my partner’s aging parents.

While BTB serves a more important role than I think you may realize–it’s still just bits and bytes–and you have to take care of self and family first.

What Are Little Boys Made Of?

In this original BTB Investigation, we unveil the tragic story of Kirk Murphy, a four-year-old boy who was treated for “cross-gender disturbance” in 1970 by a young grad student by the name of George Rekers. This story is a stark reminder that there are severe and damaging consequences when therapists try to ensure that boys will be boys.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

The Heterosexual Agenda: Exposing The Myths

At last, the truth can now be told.

Testing The Premise: Are Gays A Threat To Our Children?

Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. In this report, we explore the supposed connection between homosexuality and child sexual abuse, the conclusions reached by the most knowledgeable professionals in the field, and how anti-gay activists continue to ignore their findings. This has tremendous consequences, not just for gay men and women, but more importantly for the safety of all our children.

Straight From The Source: What the “Dutch Study” Really Says About Gay Couples

Anti-gay activists often cite the “Dutch Study” to claim that gay unions last only about 1½ years and that the these men have an average of eight additional partners per year outside of their steady relationship. In this report, we will take you step by step into the study to see whether the claims are true.

The FRC’s Briefs Are Showing

Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council submitted an Amicus Brief to the Maryland Court of Appeals as that court prepared to consider the issue of gay marriage. We examine just one small section of that brief to reveal the junk science and fraudulent claims of the Family “Research” Council.

Daniel Fetty Doesn’t Count

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
