We Found ‘Em: Jews for Prop 8

Timothy Kincaid

September 29th, 2008

There are, no doubt, many Orthodox Jews who devoutly believe that their faith requires that they oppose same-sex marriage, yet do so with decency, compassion, and empathy. Rabbi Yehuda Levin isn’t one of them.

In response to the Southern California Board of Rabbis’ decision to oppose Proposition 8, Levin has released a statement – on the Christian News Wire. Here are a few observations:

Levin chooses not to recognize gay persons as distinctly existing:

We have opposed the homosexual agenda from ‘day-one,’ when they attempted to craft a separate class based on their bedroom misbehavior.

He denies the ability of others to disagree with him and call themselves an Orthodox Jew and accuses the vast majority of Jews in this country of being “anti-Torah”:

Additionally, no one can claim to be an Orthodox Jew while denying the very commandments of the Almighty Himself. Thus, we condemn the misrepresentation on the part of any “fringe Orthodox” Jew associated with the Southern California Board Of Rabbis, or any other anti-Torah group, who seeks to pervert Divine Law to ‘conform’ to Human depravity.

Then, having insulted his fellow Jews, he demands their vote.

Finally, he calls for “militant opposition” to “propagators of cultural contamination”. Now I’m not entirely sure I know what this means, but it sounds an awful lot like “let’s go beat some gay people” to me.

Sure there are lots of decent supporters of Proposition 8. And I hope they are embarassed to be associated with someone like Levin.

Benkof at least sounds for reasonable. Isn’t this the guy who threatened a blood bath or violence or something like that if a pride march were held in Jerusalem?

“We have opposed the homosexual agenda from ‘day one’, when they attempted to craft a separate class based on their bedroom misbehavior.”

Replace “homosexual” with “Jewish” and remove “bedroom”, and this statement could have been made by any number of Nazi war criminals.

Just saying, is all.

As a jew, it always amazes me how some jewish people are so quick to jump onto the homophobia bandwagon. There are more than just a few parallels between being a jew and being a fag– as David Benkof found out when the No on 8 people didn’t want him.

Funny in a tragic, victim-of-prejudice sort of a way.

It’s heartening to see that fundamentalist Christians and meshuganah Rabbis can bridge the gulf between them to engage in some good ol’ fashion gay-hatin’…Old Testament/Torah style. Only one small problem…what about Jonathan and David? What about Ruth? And, please Rabbi Levin, care to explain the multiple wives of Solomon and many of the other Biblical Patriarchs?

Kevin-

I hear this all the time, that Ruth was somehow gay. I’ve seen the “interpretations” of David and Jonathan to suggest they were lovers, and I’m quite unimpressed. But Ruth? Exqueeze me? What’s your evidence? I’ve read the book of Ruth more than a dozen times, in Hebrew and English, and see no suggestion she was LBT in any way. She married a man and had children with him. Yes, she was close with her mother-in-law. Are all women who are close to their mothers-in-law, who even love them, therefore lesbians? Please explain.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International.
