Nikolai Alekseev, the organizer of Moscow Pride who was detailed overnight by Moscow police in the aftermath of yesterday’s violence, sent the following text message to
“I am released by court! Next hearing on 9 June. Volker Beck [member of German Parliament] was brilliant witness/ MP Mitrofanov provided me a brilliant theatrical lawyer. He was also in court. He helped to lobby authorities in our direction. That was a great combination together with Western European pressure. Thanks to the German Presidency of the EU.”

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. Anti-gay activists often charge that gay men and women pose a threat to children. The only Russian lawmaker to publicly state support for the demonstrators came from an unexpected wing: Alexei Mitrofanov of the ultranationalist Liberal Democratic Party.
“How can one act in such a manner, assuming Russia wants to be a part of Europe,” Mitrofanov said at the scene, according to the Interfax news agency.

The fact that MP Mitrofanov provided a lawyer, is impressive. Is this the same MP who is a member of a Rightwing party but spoke out against the government refusing to allow the march?

A Moscow court on Saturday convicted Nikolay Alexeyev, the organizers of a gay pride march, of holding an illegal demonstration and resisting police.
He was fined $1000 rubles each, about $40.
Before the sentence was rendered Alexeyev walked out of the courtroom in protest, calling the proceeding a “farce”.
Alexeyev accused the judge of refusing to hear defense evidence and said he would refuse to pay the fine. Another organizer of last month’s parade, Nikolay Khramov, also was fined.
Both are expected to appeal the sentences.
And trouble occurred in Romania during a gay pride march when it was attacked….
