Ah, youth! A time of incredible optimism and idealism. A new Zogby poll of how young people view their lives, futures and politics shows an encouraging outlook on homosexuality. And Gen Nexters are very likely to use a social networking website such as Facebook or Myspace — 44% have created a personal profile. These websites have become a forum where many young people can begin to flesh out how they see the world and their place in it. Naturally, teenagers being who they are, are eager to share their thoughts, no matter whether they be misguided or profound. Take, for example, this Myspace blog by a 16-year-old student who goes by the moniker, “Doc Holid♠y”.

Crowned Miss America in 1958, Anita Bryant was a wholesome, 30-something singer in the 1970s who was voted “Most Admired Woman in America” by Good Housekeeping magazine three years in a row. She parlayed her wholesome image into a successful career in the Florida Citrus campaign (“Breakfast without orange juice is like a day without sunshine”). But many of us remember her for her infamous 1977 “Save our Children” campaign to repeal a Dade County, Florida gay rights ordinance.

Commenter “Lij” corrects me in my rush to make a point in which I say, “Twin studies suggest that for some people their sexuality is genetic or congenital. But since there are examples where one identical twin is gay and another is straight, then this can’t be true for all gay twins.”

Recent research that shows a link between male homosexuality and the number of older brothers has gotten a lot of attention lately. For several decades researchers have noticed that gay men are less likely to be among the firstborn, and more specifically they are more likely to have more older brothers than sisters. This phenomenon, generally referred to as the Fraternal Birth Order effect (or sometimes the Sibling Sex Ratio effect), generally holds true for gay men but it but doesntt hold true for lesbians. Researchers have also noticed that gay men and women are more likely to be left-handed than everyone else. This study tries to look at the interaction of the two effects on homosexuality in men.

Faith is a very mysterious thing, and there is no greater testament for the power of faith than when it’s challenged at every turn but refuses to break. Gay Evangelicals provide a powerful example of this. Their faith is challenged on all fronts. They aren’t well accepted by fellow evangelical Christians, and they aren’t understood by the gay community either.

Dr. Joseph Nicolosi was one of the co-founders of NARTH, serving as its president until the end of this year. He has been a leading advocate for “reparative” therapy at Love Won Out, Exodus, and other ex-gay conferences. Daniel Gonzales, one of the authors at Ex-Gay Watch has posted a video in which he describes, in his very quiet and thoughtful way, his experiences as he underwent reparative therapy as Dr. Nicolosi’s client. He describes why he did it and what he lost as a result.

With the rapidly falling dollar, economists point to the silver lining that American-made goods are cheaper on the world markets, and that this should spur American exports. But there is one export that is faltering in the world market of ideas. The American ex-gay ministry Exodus, which claims to offer “freedom from homosexuality” is having trouble gaining a foothold in Europe.

Non-stop profanity-laced taunts and a torched car. This is what Zack, who has two fathers, experienced at Harper Junior High School in Davis, California. Appropriately enough, Tam K. Dao and colleagues addressed the consequences of adolescent bullying on the psychological well-being of young people in the August 2006 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health. They examined 186 middle-school students — students who are approximately Zack’s age — and they were able to confirm the link between persistent experience of aggression (either verbal or physical) and non-specific psychological distress. These researchers note in their discussion that this sort of stress can have serious long-term consequences.

But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.
In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
