Peterson Toscano’s Portland Mercury Interview

Jim Burroway

January 24th, 2007

Ex-ex-gay performance artist Peterson Toscano’s interview is featured in the Portland Mercury. In it, he talks about his experience in turning to religion as a refuge against his sexuality.

Peterson underwent a conversion experience and was born again. But when that wasn’t enough, he became, by turns, fundamentalist, evangelical fundamentalist, and finally Pentecostal. When none of that worked he tried exorcisms to drive the demons out. He finally spent two years at Love In Action in Memphis, spending $1000 a month to try to cure his homosexuality:

We had a football clinic. Changing your oil and stuff like that. I graduated from the program, and tried to live on the outside, to see if it worked — and it didn’t.

Check out the interview here.
