What About The Parents?

Jim Burroway

May 5th, 2007

When I went to the Love Won Out ex-gay conference in Phoenix, I fully expected to come out of that conference ready to talk about struggling ex-gays. Instead, as I sat there surrounded by parents, I realized that there are thousands of stories that haven’t been told — the stories of parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and grandparents. We have so much to learn from them about how they are sometimes harmed by ex-gay ministries.

This morning, Peterson Toscano gives us a stark example of how ex-gay programs can harm parents of struggling ex-gays. It’s very poignant. We must remember, ex-gays aren’t the only ones caught up in the harmful fallout of the ex-gay movement. It often affects the entire family.

It would be great to have a place for families of “ex”-gays and survivors of “ex”-gay ministries and reparative therapies, and the families of those who did not survive these destructive treatments, could share their experiences.
