A Full Time WHAT?

Timothy Kincaid

What does Exodus International do?  Quick, what’s your first answer?  If you said, “Serve as an umbrella organization for ex-gay ministries that seek to serve those unhappy with their same-sex attraction”, you could be forgiven.  It’s an easy mistake.

But let’s take a quick look at a little item in this “Special Report” by anti-media activist Cliff Kincaid (no relation):

Alan Chambers, the former homosexual who runs Exodus International, tries to interest the media in the fact that true change from homosexuality is possible and that people have experienced and can talk about true change. Chambers says he employs a full-time communications specialist to reach out to the media…[emphasis mine]

Personally, I think it’s time to recognize that Exodus has very little anymore to do with serving ex-gay strugglers and much more to do with anti-gay media and political activism.

From the link:
“In general, he adds, the media have a pro-homosexual slant, although he did find Lester Holt of NBC News and Anderson Cooper of CNN to be fair in their handling of the controversy.”

I couldn’t agree more. I find that the media have a pro-human slant as well, they’re very biased. At least Lester Holt and Anderson Cooper are willing to give equal time to the other side of the truth.

Oh, great. We’re talking about TRUE change now. What does that mean? Is normal change not enough? Change from homosexuality, OK, but into what? There appears to be a blank where the word ‘heterosexuality’ would be.

True Change… hm… the vocabulary expands again…

Well, Alan Chambers may state that “true change from homosexuality is possible and that people have experienced and can talk about true change,” but he has at least one leader on the Exodus site who disagrees with him.

John Smid of Love In Action is a past board member and president of Exodus and is currently listed in the “General” and “Parents & Family” sections of the “Speakers Bureau” page on the Exodus website. http://exodus.to/content/view/362/0/
His listings include this text: “Child Development, Family Dynamics, and homosexuality and personal testimony.”

One the video at http://www.current.tv/watch/22362269, John Smid says, “The term ex-gay is a quick snippet but it doesn’t really describe the truth, because ‘ex-gay’ says something like never again, ever will be, it’s all gone, it’s over, it’s done, it’s changed, it’s transformed. I’ve never known anyone that’s experienced that, including myself.” Emphasis mine.

What do they mean by “ex-gay” anyway? Just ask any heterosexual person who tries to tell you a gay person can change his/her orientation, “If ex-gay is possible, is ex-heterosexual also possible?”

If the media would do some real investigative reporting about these parallel charlatan organizations, they would stop howling for attention. But then, they’d be exposed for what they are and the “controversy” would be about their creatively concocted subversive activism.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
