AAPA Approve a New Position Statement on Conversion Therapy

Jim Burroway

May 31st, 2007

The American Academy of Physician Assistants passed a resolution opposing sexual orientation conversion therapies which are based on the assumption that homosexuality is a disorder requiring a cure:

The American Academy of Physician Assistants opposes any psychiatric treatment directed specifically at changing sexual orientation, such as “conversion” or “reparative” therapy which is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her sexual orientation.

The resolution was passed by the AAPA’s House of Delegates during their 35th annual conference in Philadelphia after an unusually contentious debate on the floor. This final resolution is in line with the American Medical Association’s position on conversion therapies.
