Bay Windows Report On Emergence of Ex-Gay Survivors

Jim Burroway

July 19th, 2007

Boston’s Bay Windows has just published a good report on the ex-gay survivor’s conference. While most survivors talk about the harms they experienced in ex-gay ministries and therapies, I find it interesting that reporters are noticing that some can point to some positive aspects of their ex-gay experiences:

Yet Toscano said another surprise was that some people were willing to acknowledge positive aspects about their ex-gay experience. One person wrote, “Part of the journey of becoming who God is making me to be.” Another wrote, “My partner says her years as an ex-gay were wasted. But God is using that experience in her ministry and those years make her the person she is today — and I love that person with all my heart and soul.”

There are many areas of common ground between ex-gays and ex-ex-gays, and there really is a genuine kinship between them. And I use the word “kinship” in it’s close, familial sense. They are family to each other. Maybe that’s why so many ex-gay leaders are so defensive.
