Lutherans to Discuss Gay Clergy

Timothy Kincaid

August 3rd, 2007

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America requires that its gay and lesbian clergy remain celibate.  However, a resolution will be presented next week to lift this ban.

Almost a third of the church’s synods, or regional governing bodies, have endorsed a proposal that would permit gay and lesbian pastors in committed relationships to serve congregations and would reinstate those who have been removed because of a same-sex relationship.

There appear to be three camps in the debate: those who seek to lift the ban, those who believe gay persons should either not serve or should be celibate, and those who want to wait until a broader social statement on sexuality is scheduled to be released by the church in two years. We’ll report back on the outcome of any decision.

Something that is so stupid about this (other than the fact that they are still debating it) – What do you do with the clergy during the time they are transitioning from celebate to in a committed relationship? and what if their relations ends? do they get defrocked as well?
