Mormons Continue Clarification of Postion on Homosexuality

Timothy Kincaid

September 19th, 2007

Per the Salt Lake Tribune, the LDS Church (the Mormons) continue to issue statements that seek to differentiate between orientation and behavior.

In the article, Holland reiterates the church’s position that same-sex attraction is not a sin; only acting on it is immoral. He does not try to explain the causes of these attractions, but acknowledges they are real.

“Through the exercise of faith, individual efforts and reliance on the power of [Christ's] Atonement, some may resolve same gender attraction in mortality and marry,” he writes. “Others, however, may never be free of same-gender attraction in this life.”

Holland, an apostle of the LDS church, claims that: “Through the exercise of faith, individual efforts and reliance on the power of [Christ's] Atonement, some may resolve same gender attraction in mortality and marry. Others, however, may never be free of same-gender attraction in this life.”

When will these men realize that for their own believing members, this sort of language generates self-hatred and despair?? The same language is used in the recently-released pamphlet on the subject. These men seem oblivious to the fact that for gay LDS men, this language clearly implies that those who don’t “overcome” their homosexuality have FAILED to sufficiently follow their little recipie of “faith, individual efforts and reliance on the power of [Christ's] Atonement”.

I don’t agree with the LDS idea that gays must be celibate for life in order to please deity, but even for those who accept such an idea, THIS language has got to change.

The Mormon General Authority said: “…Others, however, may never be free of same-gender attraction in this life.”

“…in this life?” I want to be gay in the NEXT life too! In fact, I think I was gay in my previous life. It was foreordained. My creator knew I could handle being same-gender attracted.

The cathlics tried this too for quite a while. It didn’t work well. they eventually settled for “intrinsic moral evil.” no iother sin has ever qualified for that status. It is a recognition that sexual orientation is inherent, at least.
