Unarguably Homophobic

Timothy Kincaid

November 5th, 2007

fletchers_press.jpgOften anti-gays will pretend to misunderstand the meaning of the word “homophobia”. They will say, “phobia means afraid, and I’m not afraid of nothing, especially some gay guy”. And we at BTB seldom employ the word simply because it often gets bogged down in what it means and whether we are throwing labels and accusations, etc. ad nauseum.

But the Republican Party of Kentucky, via Pat Boone, gave us a very clear illustration of homophobia – and it’s the kind that is based on fear.

Having lost the battle of ideas and having failed to live up to his constituents’ expectations, Governor Ernie Fletcher re-election campaign has a double digit deficit in the polls. So the Party, in desperation, paid for a robo-call campaign for Pat Boone to tell registered voters:

…Ernie Fletcher is a typical Kentuckian. He’s worked long and hard for the state, its people, and its traditions. And of course he’s come under attack by political opponents. And now, he faces a man who wants his job, who has consistently supported every homosexual cause – same-sex marriage, gay adoption, special rights to gay, lesbian, bisexual even transgender individuals. The prominent gay advocacy group CFAIR just enthusiastically endorsed Beshear, knowing he’s their guy. Kentuckians have already voted to amend the state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. Now, do you want a governor who would like Kentucky to be another San Francisco? Please re-elect Ernie Fletcher. This message paid for by the Republican Party of Kentucky.”

That, my friends, is a fear based ad. Fear of the kind of people you find in San Francisco. Fear of gay adoption, fear of the transgendered, fear of (shudder) gay marriage.

Vote for Ernie Fletcher or in some unidentifiable way The Gays are gunna get ya.

And there is no definition of homophobia that the Party’s action doesn’t cover.
