Chisinau Mayor Bans Gay Pride Parade

It was just this morning when we reported that Moldova was about to witness its very first Gay Pride parade n Chisinau, the nation’s capital. Now we find that the mayor of Chisinau has banned the parade just two days before it was to take place.

GenderDoc-M, the group that is organizing the parade, says that the mayor has no power to ban the march under a new Moldovan law on public manifestations. According to GenderDoc-M, if the authorities have proof that there could be serious trouble at an event, then a court decision is needed to impose a ban. The mayor has no power to act unilaterally. Last year, the Moldova Supreme Court ruled that Chisinau city officials had violated the Moldovan constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights by banning a previous Gay Pride march.

GenderDoc-M is calling on city authorities to rescind the ban and for city police to provide adequate protection for Pride participants.

Here is a first hand account of yesterday’s march from my friend in Moldova:

Radical Orthodox Christians and Communists blocked the bus with
gay participants, preventing them from marching. The police did
now show up (though it was previously and repeatedly asked to be there) so that
the
participants had to stay in the bus for security reasons and finally
got back to their office. Their stuff was destroyed by the enraged crowd.
It is sad that you’ll see no crowd protesting against the poverty in
Moldova, the crimes committed by the Communist authorities,
all-over-spread trafficking in women, organs, child abuse, etc. When it
comes to inoffensive gay parade, Moldovans all of a sudden feel
“endangered” and see the gays as their main public enemy. It’s
disgusting. It reminded me of the dark middle age and Inquisition. Long ago I
came to the conclusion that logic and reasoning
have no value for certain categories of people and have no impact on
them. It’s just a matter of pathologic hatred and infantile thinking
and state of soul.

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. But that is exactly what happened. In this report, we review our collection of more than 500 posts to tell the story of one nation’s embrace of hatred toward gay people. This report will be updated continuously as events continue to unfold. Check here for the latest updates.

Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.

Straight From The Source: What the “Dutch Study” Really Says About Gay Couples

The FRC’s Briefs Are Showing

Daniel FettyThe FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics aren’t as complete as they ought to be, and their report for 2004 was no exception. In fact, their most recent report has quite a few glaring holes. Holes big enough for Daniel Fetty to fall through.
