Greece’s First Same-Sex Marriage

We reported last week that mayor Tassos Alfieris of the Greek island of Tilos announced that he would officiate the first same-sex wedding ceremony in Greece. Today, the BBC reports that two men and two women were married in civil ceremonies, despite threats from Greece’s top prosecutor to criminally charge the mayor if he went forward with the weddings.

According to this article:

“If the Tilos mayor proceeds, he will have committed the criminal act of ‘breach of duty’,” Supreme Court prosecutor George Sanidas warned on Friday.

No indication of how serious a charge that is or what the consequences of a conviction might be.

The mayor of Tilos was charged with a crime the next day. Maximal sentence of five years imprisonment.

“ATHENS, June 4, 2008 ( – The mayor of the tiny Aegean Sea island of Tilos, 400 kilometres southeast of Athens, was charged with breach of duty after conducting Greece’s first same-sex “marriage” ceremonies, in defiance of a prosecutor’s order calling such weddings illegal.”
