Hearings Set for “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Timothy Kincaid

July 17th, 2008

The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is now reporting that hearings will be held on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, the Military’s ban on service by openly gay citizens.

On July 23 the Military Personnel Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee will hold a hearing on the impact of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law banning service by openly lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. The hearing will be the first since Congress enacted “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” fifteen years ago.

The hearings were scheduled by Congresswoman Susan Davis, (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Personnel Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. Davis’ district includes San Diego’s three military bases and Davis lived for years as a military wife.

Scheduled to testify against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” are U.S. Army Major General Vance Coleman (Ret.), U.S. Navy Captain Joan E. Darrah (Ret.), and former Marine Staff Sgt. Eric F. Alva.

It will be interesting to see who will speak in favor of the current policy.

This is wonderful!

Now, what we really need, is for Colin Powell and Sam Nunn to admit that they were wrong in 1993, apologize for all the harm they did, and call for overturning the policy so the U.S. military can, you know, catch up with the defense forces of the UK, NATO, Israel, and so on.

(Okay, I’ll drop my request for the apology, just so long as they do the rest.)

If you visit the House Armed Services Committee website:, you can view the calendar for the current week and sign up for their email list. I’ve already received the email confirming the hearings will take place next week.

Maybe Bill Clinton (D) will show up in support of keeping this policy since it was his idea to begin with…not all democrats are on our side no matter what we think…better not be naive…we have many enemies among Republicans that is for sure, but we are living in la la land if we think that all democrats are going to do the right thing….people are people..good and bad regardless of politics!
