Gay Vote Remains 4%

Timothy Kincaid

November 8th, 2008

Those persons who were willing to identify as gay or lesbian to exil pollsters remained constant in 2008 at 4%. That translates to roughly five million voters.

This percentage is consistent with exit polling in 2004 and 2000.

And if they follow with the rest of the population which, this year, had a 40% of the population turnout then there’s 10% of gay ppl in US. I would like to think, however, that gay ppl had a higher turnout as they have 1 more thing at stake other than the economy, healthcare… etc.

Joel-That’s bad math. If we take the percentage of voters who self-identify as LGBT to be representative of the population as a whole it would suggest that LGBTs are 4% of the population. It works like this: if voters are 40% of the total population and LGBT voters are 4% of voters, that means LGBTs who vote are 1.6% of the whole population (4% of 40%). As you suggest, its hard to know if LGBTs vote at a higher or lower percentage than the population at large.
