“It’s sort of like ‘Gay Survivor.’ We’re going to outlive, outlast, and outsmart the bigots.”

A wise man, that Mr. Savage is. Those LDS people, however, are just human santorum.

I’m still not clear on what saddlebacking is in reference to.

I’ve started calling it “Rick Warren’s Bareback Church.”

cowboy, my guess is that it’s a callback to both “brokeback” and “bareback”…but I don’t think it’s an actual practice.

If it were, my guess is that it means sex with a condom (or while wearing a saddle).

I think it’s just that it SOUNDS like it could be something dirty, so that’s what they made it.

AJD

Willie, that’s certainly a possibility. If it’s not actually a slang term, it could become one, sort of like Savage did to “santorum.” I could see “saddlebacking” as the opposite of “barebacking.”

The saddleback comment was a reference to a joke that Colbert made earlier in the program about Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church.

Psst… Jim… it’s spelled “Stephen.”

Jim Burroway

Ironic, given that he pronounces his last name “wrong.” Anyway, it’s corrected.

AJD

I read an interview with him a while back, and he said his parents gave him and his siblings a choice to pronounce their name “COAL-bert” or “coal-BEAR,” and he chose the latter. When you watch the show, you may also notice he pronounces “Report” like “rapport” (i.e. minus the “t”).

On the way home tonight I might stop in my favorite pharmacy and buy some stuff for my saddlebacking this weekend.

and to Ms. S. Davis:
I tip my hat to you. That was an excellent response. Prime-time material. That made my day.

“Coal-bear” is the proper pronounciation of “Colbert” in French.

Just as “lamb-bear” is the proper pronunciation of “Lambert” in French.

If Stephen (or anyone else sharing that name) prefers to use the French pronunciation of their name, that’s their privilege. Personally, I don’t consider that much of an affectation, if any at all. And it certainly isn’t “wrong.”

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.

From the Inside: Focus on the Family’s “Love Won Out”

On February 10, I attended an all-day “Love Won Out” ex-gay conference in Phoenix, put on by Focus on the Family and Exodus International. In this series of reports, I talk about what I learned there: the people who go to these conferences, the things that they hear, and what this all means for them, their families and for the rest of us.
