Merry Christmas

Timothy Kincaid

December 24th, 2008

I wish you and all of yours the very merriest Christmas.

And leave you for the holiday with this image, a familiar one – though you probably don’t know its history.

Although Santa Claus certainly predates the 1920′s, he didn’t always look much like this guy. Although Thomas Nast had given Santa a shape and look, it wasn’t until J. C. Leyendecker created a consistent look for Santa Clause as a rotund fellow with red cheeks and a red and white suit for the covers of the Saturday Evening Post that Santa Claus, as we know him, came to be.

Leyendecker also created the Arrow Collar Man, the New Years Baby, and a number of other iconic American images. In retrospect, some of his illustration can be seen to have strong homoerotic elements. He died in 1951, leaving behind Charles Beach, his partner of 48 years.

Actually Santa is Canadian. He lives in Canada at the North pole and his red and white suit is based on the red and white of the Canadian flag.

I know it may not be proper but I would wish a hug to everyone here. Okay…maybe just a fist-bump with one or two of you.

Have a warm Christmas everyone. Even if you’re in Southern California or Arizona, you know what I mean.

Does every gay artist have to have people picking apart stuff that might be “homoerotic” from their work? I hope when I’M a dead (and hopefully famous) artist people aren’t perpetually looking for vaginas and sexual positions in MY work.

Are you sure it is Santa CLAUSE Timothy? I swear I am having some flashbacks about a certain Tim Allen movie.

Anyway, to all writers and readers and commenters here in Box Turtle Bulletin… MERRY CHRISTMAS… from halfway across the world…. :-)
