New DNC Chair No Friend of LGBT Rights

Jim Burroway

Now that the Rick Warren furor is subsiding, new concerns are raised over the prospects that Virginia governor Timothy Kaine will become the new chair of the Democratic National Committee. Kaine has been described as “mixed” on gay issues — and this description is relative to the already low expectations of Virginia politics. Kaine offered nothing but the most timid token opposition Virginia’s draconian marriage amendment.

Michael in Norfolk, a lawyer, has some additional gripes against Kaine, regarding a state employee who was fired for being gay just one week after the anti-marriage amendment passed:

Kaine did sign Executive Order 1 (2006) purporting to protect gay state employees upon taking office, thereby extending the policy of incoming U.S. Senator Mark Warner who Kaine succeeded as governor. But in terms of making sure that the Executive Order is enforced in a competent and timely manner, Kaine has been 100% missing in action. Moreover, the alleged investigation by the governmental department supposedly charged with enforcing the Executive Order of a complaint filed by a client against the Virginia Museum of Natural History has by the agency’s own prior statements already taken 440+ days longer than it should have. And still no determination is in sight.

That beeping noise you hear? It may well be a bus backing up to run over us again.

I can’t think of a single Democrat more socially conservative than Tim Kaine. What a very peculiar choice.

Kaine has been “no friend” for quite a while.

I’m all for shoring up all of our bases in anticipation for what is to come next but I still say we need to be careful in terms of registering opposition to folks who haven’t even taken office yet.

…Now that the Rick Warren furor is subsiding….

What makes you think the RW is subsiding?

Also, it’s safe to assume Kaine will continue the frightening Democratic trend of sucking up to the religious right, perhaps to an extent exceeding Obama’s Warren gambit.

The bus is also backing up in New York. David Paterson made a bold move when he ordered all NY State Agencies to recognize gay marriages that are legally performed outside New York, but this directive doesn’t amount to very many. Paterson’s State Tax Department has issued a reading indicating that gay couples legally married outside New YOrk must still file as “unmarried single” since New York State and City Tax filing must match the status indicated on one’s Federal Tax filing. Since the Federal Government doesn;t recognize gay marriage, neither will the NY State Tax Department, not even if gay marriage is made legal in New York. Paterson has been mute on the issue and rumor has it, he was all in favor of indefinitely delaying a vite in the State Senate on gay marriage in order to placate a homophobic State Senator who has refused to back the Democratic Majority Leader on account of this issue.

Oakland.

#1. Stop shouting. It makes you look like an idiot.

#2. I wrote this piece, not Timothy. Get straight who you’re mad at. It makes you look like an idiot.

#3. Timothy is probably the last person who anyone would describe as a “straight line Democrat.” I assure you, he isn’t. Get to know your writers better. Not doing so makes you look like an idiot.

#4. None of us anywhere on this blog have publicly endorsed any political candidates. If we had, you might be surprised. This allows us to report critically on both sides of the aisle, which we do every chance we get. We’ve raked Obama over the coals, as we have McCain. And we’ve praised Obama and McCain where warranted. Pay attention. You’re starting to look like an idiot.

If Kaine is indeed as portrayed, it just reinforces my personal pledge to not ever vote for another Democrat in any capacity until the party adopts a pro-equality marriage stance. That includes 2012.

#5 If you want to make the point that Democrats are far from perfect (or even far from acceptable/passable) on gay rights issues by all mean do so, but when you say that the Democrats are NO better on gay rights issues than Republicans it make you look like an idiot.

Then again, if it looks like a duck…

Oh, and just in case there is anyone left in the gayborhood who still believes that the HRC has any credibility left consider the fact that they issued a press release on their website’s “Back Page” praising the appointment of Kaine.

They went on and on about how he helped turn Virginia blue and how he’ll help the Democratic Party do this and that yet there was nary a mention of the fact that he is anti marriage equality, anti civil unions and generally anti-gay due to his religious orthodoxy.

HRC truly is a Democratic Party activist organization more than they are a GLBT rights activist organization. I’m a dyed in the wool Democrat and I find their devotion to the Democratic Party, even when it’s to the detriment of the gay community, disgusting.

They’ll never see another dime from me.

OMG, Zeke,

I read the HRC commentary and you are correct. They have become the WORST kind of partisan organization: the kind that makes excuses and provides cover.

I agree with the position taken by the Norfolk attorney! Gov. Kaine has done nothing to enforce Executive Order (1) 2006 and leaves all gay Virginia state employees hanging out to dry! He, like our president said certain things to get our votes, and then shruggs us off. Enough is Enough, Gov. Kaine is as bad a choice for DNC Chair as Rick Warren is for the prayer! Wake up my gay friends ====== politicians are no friends to us!

Slouching Towards Kampala: Uganda’s Deadly Embrace of Hate

When we first reported on three American anti-gay activists traveling to Kampala for a three-day conference, we had no idea that it would be the first report of a long string of events leading to a proposal to institute the death penalty for LGBT people. Paul Cameron’s World

In 2005, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that “[Paul] Cameron’s ‘science’ echoes Nazi Germany.” What the SPLC didn”t know was Cameron doesn’t just “echo” Nazi Germany. He quoted extensively from one of the Final Solution’s architects. This puts his fascination with quarantines, mandatory tattoos, and extermination being a “plausible idea” in a whole new and deeply disturbing light.
