Unions Support Overturning Proposition 8

Timothy Kincaid

January 13th, 2009

The efforts to overturn Proposition 8 on constitutional grounds has been joined by California’s labor representatives:

More than 50 labor organizations, including United Healthcare Workers and the California Labor Federation, will file amicus brief in lawsuits to overturn ban on same-sex marriage.

The listing of participating parties is impressive. And while I’m not particularly shocked by the support from the Screen Actors Guild or the Association of Flight Attendants, I’m happy to see ironworkers, cement masons, and teamsters giving their support to our cause as well.

I don’t understand why being a flight attendant is especially “gay.”

And I think regarding stereotypes, you’re forgetting us lesbians. we ARE stereotypically “butch” and involved in manual labor. Maybe, in terms of stereotypes, the lesbos are pushing the labor unions to get involved.

I don’t know why either, Emily, but I have noticed a disproportionate number of seemingly gay flight attendants. These are stereotypes, sure, but I think there’s a large grain of truth running through them.

Are there proportionately as many lesbians in iron working and such? I have no idea. Whatever the cause, I’m grateful to have the support of these unions (many of which comprise predominantly blue-collar workers who tend unfortunately to be rather less in favor of marriage equality than higher socioeconomic classes).

I’m a lesbian teamster and I’m so happy to hear this! :)
